Lila: The Grieving Queen

Yoga Vasishtha 3.15

The story · English

Vasishtha begins by telling Rama that the world is as empty as pearls seen in the sky by a trick of the eye. Its objects are like waves rising on a calm sea, or like water seen in a desert mirage. The mind paints the world and then believes its own painting. Solid earth, weighed on the scales of philosophy, is light as air. Rama asks for the story that will make this clear, and Vasishtha agrees to tell him about a temple, and about a queen.

Long ago there lived a prince named Padma, as fragrant and graceful as the lotus he was named for. He was wise, prosperous and blessed with good children, a patron of scholars and a terror to his enemies. His wife was Lila, playful as her name, gentle, sweet-spoken and always smiling. She felt his sorrow and his joy as her own. They wandered gardens and groves together, played chess and dice, sang, danced, rowed boats, and solved riddles. They loved only each other.

In the middle of all this happiness Lila began to worry. She thought of her husband, young and dear to her as life, and wondered how he could escape old age and death. She wanted hundreds of years with him on beds of flowers. So she invited learned Brahmans, honoured them with gifts, and asked how a man might become immortal. They answered kindly and plainly: holy people can achieve much by austerity and prayer, but no one on earth ever escapes death.

Lila thought it over, afraid. If she died first, she would be free of the pain of parting. But if he died first, she resolved that his soul should never leave the rooms of the palace, so she could stay near him always. She began to worship Sarasvati, goddess of wisdom, without telling her husband. She fasted, broke her fast every third night, and fed the holy people. She kept this up for a hundred of those three-night observances, while caring for him as before.

Pleased, Sarasvati appeared and told Lila to ask for a boon. Lila praised her and asked for two things: that after her husband died, his soul would not go beyond the shrine in her inner rooms, and that the goddess would appear whenever Lila called. Sarasvati said, "Be it so," and vanished like a wave sinking back into the sea. Time rolled on like a great wheel. The king grew dry as a withered leaf, and then he died.

Lila faded beside his body like a lotus without its lake. Her lips went pale, her eyes went dark as a house when its lamp goes out, and she stood mute as a statue. Then Sarasvati took pity, as the first rain falls on fish in a drying pond. She told Lila to lay the body in the shrine and cover it with flowers. While the flowers stayed fresh the body would not decay, and his soul would not leave the palace. Lila did so and waited, like a poor man hoping for treasure.

At midnight, when the household slept, Lila went to the shrine and called the goddess with all her sorrow. Sarasvati came and said the world is full of errors, bright as false water in a mirage. Lila begged to know where her husband was, and to be taken to him. The goddess said his spirit was in the sky of the Intellect, the region that holds both the visible world and the mind. If Lila gave up her desires and rested there, she would reach him, and know the truth beyond the world.

Lila sat in deep meditation. In a moment she slipped out of her body like a bird from its cage and rose into that region. There she saw her husband on a throne, with kings around him, crowds shouting "Long live the king," and sages waiting at the eastern gate. Messengers brought news of wars and envoys came from every sea. The air smelled of flowers and camphor. Lila walked through it all unseen, as one empty space mixes with another.

She noticed that everything was just as it had been: the same ministers, scholars, servants and citizens going about the same business. Then wildfire spread in broad daylight, and the sun and moon appeared together in the sky. And there was her husband, now a boy of ten, shaking off his old age, sitting among his court. Lila began to wonder whether these people were living beings or only the ghosts of what they had been. Her trance broke, and she found herself in her own rooms at midnight.

She woke her sleeping attendants one by one and said she wished to go to the royal hall. She wanted to sit beside the throne and see the courtiers alive, to settle her doubt. They answered, "Be it so." Club-bearers ran to summon the court, sweepers cleaned the grounds, and lamps shone like stars. The ministers and chiefs took their seats, and camphor and lotus scent filled the air. Lila sat on a golden seat beside the throne, bright as Rati beside Kama. She saw every prince, elder and friend in his proper place, and her face shone like the moon to find them all alive again.
