Devotion Alone Wins Krishna

Bhagavata Purana 11.14.20

Neither yoga nor Samkhya wins me, Uddhava, nor right conduct, nor study, austerity or renunciation, as strong devotion does. I am taken by devotion alone, by faith, I who am the Self and dear to the good. Devotion fixed firmly on me purifies even the dog-eaters, the outcastes, from the taint of their birth.

Three words carry the teaching. Bhakti is loving devotion, from the root bhaj, to share in: it is a relationship, not a technique. Shraddha is faith, a trusting that leans toward its object. Shvapaka, literally a dog-cooker, is the text's word for those at the very bottom of the social order of its day. Krishna lists what people usually count as the strong paths: yoga, Samkhya (the discernment of self from matter), dharma, study, austerity, renunciation. He says none of them wins him the way intense bhakti does. He is not calling them worthless. He is saying what holds him. Next he says he is grasped by devotion alone, through faith. He calls himself the Self and the beloved of the good, so he is not far away; he is what a devotee loves most. Last, he says devotion fixed on him purifies even the outcaste from the fault of birth. Sridhara Svami reads this as showing how wide the door is: birth does not close it. Krishna says this to Uddhava because Uddhava is about to be left behind and needs the one thing that will not leave. Krishna asks him to hold the whole teaching on love, not on his own accomplishments.

A child brings home a lopsided clay pot. The parent does not judge the glaze or the shape; the gift is taken because of who gave it and how much love went into it. Krishna is won the same way: by the love brought to him, not by the skill or rank of the one who brings it.

1. Pick one time today, five minutes, in a quiet spot, such as before the first meal or just before sleep. 2. Say Krishna's name, or sit and think of him, with no goal and nothing to get right. 3. If you notice yourself measuring how well you are doing, set the measuring down and return to the name. 4. Afterward, notice whether the five minutes felt like a task or like visiting someone you are fond of.

A hospital cleaner on the night shift sits on the back stairs at four in the morning. He never went to school beyond the early years, cannot recite a verse, and half believes his quiet prayer does not count beside those of learned people. Krishna's words answer him directly. What wins Krishna is love and trust, and study, rank and birth are not the price of entry. So the man can stop comparing his prayer with anyone else's and simply say the name, tired and unpolished, as it is. Ordinary experience agrees that a person who is not being measured breathes easier. Still, the verse does not promise that his back will stop aching, that his pay will rise, or that other people will stop looking down on him. It does not replace a doctor for the exhaustion or the sleeplessness of night work. It says only what it takes to reach Krishna.
