Meaning · English

Hunger and thirst asked him, 'Find us a home.' He said, 'I make you sharers with these gods.' So every offering to any god holds a portion for them too.

The gods here are the powers that have just settled into the person: speech, breath, sight, hearing, mind and the rest. Each now has its own seat in the body. Hunger and thirst ask for a seat of their own. They are not given one. Instead the Self makes them partners in all the others. The proof offered comes from ritual: whenever an oblation is lifted up for any god at all, hunger and thirst take part in it. They have no single place, so they are present in every place.

Picture an apartment building. Each tenant has a flat with their own door and number. The electricity has no flat. It runs through every wall and shows up on every tenant's bill. The tenants are the powers, each with its organ. Hunger and thirst are the current, drawing a little from every one of them.
