If what is real has no difference in it, how can such a question arise, O brahmins? And what is there for me, the speaker, to stand on? Among beings made of the five elements, alike in what they truly are, the question 'Who are you?' is only a play of words and serves no purpose. Whatever is taken in by the mind, by speech, by sight, or by the other senses is I alone. Nothing is other than me. Understand this directly.
Three words carry it. Ananatva is 'not-manyness': a, not, and nana, many. Vacarambha is 'begun in speech': vac, voice, and arambha, a beginning. It names a distinction that exists only because a word was spoken. Atman is the Self, the one who is aware. In Krishna's retelling to Uddhava, the sages have come to the Swan and asked, 'Who are you?' The Swan turns the question over. If what is real is one, with no difference in it, then 'you' and 'I' have nothing to sort them by. So he asks what the question could rest on, and what the speaker could stand on to answer it. Next he says all beings are made of the same five elements and are alike in what they truly are. Asking 'who are you?' as though to find a separate kind of being is then a handle made of words, and it does no work. Last he says what remains: whatever mind thinks, speech says, the eye sees or any sense takes in is his own Self, and nothing exists apart from it. He asks the sages to grasp this directly, not as a theory. The reason is the question Brahma could not answer: how can the mind let go of objects when mind and objects are bound together? The Swan loosens the question itself. The mind clutches things as other than itself, and that 'other' is what he questions. The commentators read the reply as turning the sages from name and body toward the Self.
A goldsmith melts a ring, a bracelet and an earring into one lump. Each had its own name and shape, and a buyer could ask which was which. Now only gold is left. The names were words laid over one metal, as the Swan says every name and form is laid over the one Self.
1. Today, pick one ordinary object near you, a cup or a key. Look at it for one minute. Notice that its name is a word you added to what you see. 2. When you meet someone, notice the labels your mind attaches first: job, age, rank. Let them rest for one breath before you speak. 3. Tonight, write one line on what a label hid from you today.
A man, laid off a month ago, stands at a cousin's wedding reception holding a plate of rice. The fourth person in a row asks, 'And what do you do?' Each time he feels himself shrink to a title he no longer has. The Swan's teaching offers him a different footing. The question is a handle of words. He can answer it politely, 'I was in logistics, I am looking,' as one gives a name at a counter, without taking the answer for who he is. He can notice that the person asking is also holding a label, and that the labels sit on top of something they do not measure. Ordinary experience agrees that people feel smaller when reduced to one word, and steadier when they are met as a whole person. The text teaches this as the Self beneath every name. It does not pay the rent, bring the job back or take the sting from the fourth question. It does not replace practical help, or a doctor if the strain turns to low mood that will not lift.
