Meaning · English
At the beginning of the Treta age, O fortunate one, the threefold Veda, knowledge itself, came forth from my heart as my breath. From it I appeared as the threefold sacrifice. Brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas and shudras were born from the cosmic person, from his mouth, arms, thighs and feet, each known by their own way of conduct.
Three words carry this teaching. Trayi is the threefold Veda, from tri, three: the three collections of sacred knowledge. Vidya is knowledge, from vid, to know. Varna is a class of society, and its first sense is colour. Krishna tells Uddhava that at the start of the Treta age, the second age, knowledge came out of his heart as his breath, the way breath leaves a body without effort. From that Veda he took the form of the threefold sacrifice, the fire rite the Veda lays out. He then says four classes were born from the cosmic person, the vast being whose body is the world. Priests and teachers come from the mouth, rulers and protectors from the arms, traders and farmers from the thighs, and those who serve with their hands from the feet. Each is marked by its own conduct, by how its people live. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, not a rule given for ours. It is told as one body whose parts each do their own work. Uddhava has asked about dharma, and Krishna starts at the root: duty comes from the same source as knowledge. The teaching asks the listener to see their own work as a part of a whole.
Think of a house. The roof keeps off rain, the walls hold the roof up, the floor takes every footstep, the doorway lets people in. No part is the house alone, and each carries a different load. The cosmic person is the house, and the four classes are its parts, each bearing its own load.
1. Today, pick one small job you do for others that nobody thanks you for: washing cups, locking up, answering a call for an elder. 2. Do it slowly, with your full attention, for ten minutes. 3. Afterwards, thank one person whose work for you usually goes unseen. 4. Tonight, notice whether the small job felt smaller or larger than it did this morning.
A man stands in a wedding kitchen at dawn, scrubbing huge steel vessels while his cousins greet guests in bright clothes. He feels his job is the least of the day. Krishna's picture of one body, each part doing the work that falls to it, changes what he sees. The guests will eat from those vessels, and the day does not run without them. He can do the work whole-heartedly and know what it holds up. Ordinary experience agrees that people who see how their task serves a larger purpose tend to carry it with less resentment. The text's picture of society is of its own age. Today's understanding finds no basis for saying that ability or worth follows the family a person is born into, and the verse's lasting use is the narrower one of fitting duty to place and caring for the whole. It does not remove the sting of being overlooked, and it does not make unfair work or poor pay any lighter.
