Meaning · English

By whose opening and closing of the eyes the world rises and dissolves, to him we offer praise: Shankara, from whom springs the splendor of the wheel of powers.

Four words carry it. Unmesha is the opening of the eyes, from a root meaning to open or flash forth. Nimesha is the closing. Shakti-chakra is the wheel of powers: the many capacities of knowing, willing and acting that turn together. Shankara is Shiva as the giver of wellbeing, from sham, welfare, and kara, maker. The Spanda Karikas begin with a bow. They say the world's rising and its dissolving happen through Shiva's opening and closing, as a person's world appears and vanishes with a lifted or lowered lid. Creation is not a heavy labour here. It is as light as a glance. The wheel of powers, every faculty a being uses to see, want and act, has its splendor from him. Powers are not the source. They turn because he turns them. This comes first because the whole book is about a single throb of consciousness, and the reader must know whose it is before learning to notice it. The commentators take the eyelids as a picture of how effortlessly he does this. Praise here is also a way of looking: the opening line asks the listener to see the world as arising from awareness, not standing apart from it. The teaching itself begins after the bow.

A storyteller begins, and a whole village rises in the minds of the children listening: roofs, a well, a barking dog. She pauses, and it is gone, without any wreckage. The village arrived by her telling and left by her silence. The world, the verse says, rises and sets in a similar way, through the act of a single awareness.

1. Tomorrow morning, when you wake, keep your eyes closed for five slow breaths before reaching for anything. 2. Open them slowly. Notice the room arriving: light, shapes, colours, sounds. 3. Once during the day, close your eyes for three seconds in an ordinary place, then open them and watch the place return. 4. In each case, notice only that something is looking, and that the looking comes first.

An old woman wakes from an afternoon nap on the verandah. For a moment she does not know the hour or the place. Then the room assembles itself: the cane chair, the clatter from the kitchen, her granddaughter's voice. She knows where she is before she can say how she knows. The verse speaks to that small moment. The text teaches that the world's coming and going is tied to the opening and closing of a single awareness, and that her own waking is a small copy of it. Step by step, she can watch the room arrive, notice that something was present to receive it, and bow, as the Karikas do, toward that presence before getting up to do anything. Ordinary experience confirms the plain part: the world is there for us when we are awake and absent when we are in deep sleep. The verse does not promise to explain how bodies or galaxies come to be, and it does not clear the confusion some people feel on waking. If disorientation is frequent, severe or new, a doctor should look at it.
