As a dream is seen, as a magician's trick is seen, as a city built of clouds is seen, so the wise, in the texts of Vedanta, see this whole world. There is no dissolution and no birth. No one is bound and no one is a seeker. No one longs for freedom and no one is freed. This is the highest truth.
Three words carry the verse. Maya is a conjuring trick, from a root meaning to make or measure out: an appearance produced that looks solid and is not what it seems. Gandharvanagara is the city of the gandharvas, the old name for a castle in the clouds that looks like streets and towers until the light shifts. Paramartha is the highest sense of things, from parama, highest, and artha, what a thing truly is. Gaudapada gives three pictures: a dream, a magician's trick, a cloud city. Each is vivid and is really experienced, yet none stands on its own. He says the wise of the Vedanta texts see the world this way. Then he draws the consequence. If the world is like this, nothing in it truly begins or ends, so there is no birth and no dissolution. Without those, no one is truly tied, so there is no one to be freed, no one wanting freedom, no one working toward it. The point is not that effort is foolish. Gaudapada is answering a worry raised by his own teaching: if the world is dream-like, who is bound? Shankara reads the verse as speaking from the standpoint of the highest truth, not of ordinary life. The Buddhist thinker Nagarjuna also denied real arising and ceasing, and Gaudapada's wording sits close to that. What he asks of the listener is to look at bondage, seeking and release themselves as appearances, and ask what stays when they are seen through.
A child wakes from a dream of being chased and tied to a tree. The ropes were vivid, the fear was real, but no rope ever existed and no one untied her. Being bound, struggling and being freed all happened inside the dream. The verse says the same of the whole story of bondage and release.
1. Tonight, when you wake or before sleep, recall one dream in some detail, including how real it felt. 2. Ask who was afraid or wanting in it, and where the dream's rooms and people were while it ran. 3. Tomorrow, when a worry grips you for a moment, ask the same two questions of it, for one minute only. 4. Notice whether the worry loosens, even slightly, and then carry on with your day.
A woman wakes at four in the morning, heart pounding, certain she has missed a flight and left her mother at the airport. She lies there, breath fast, sweat on her neck. Then she realises it was a dream. Within a minute her heart slows, though nothing around her has changed except what she knows. That small moment is what the verse points to. The fear was real in the body, the airport was not outside her, and the one who was lost and desperate dissolves on waking. Gaudapada teaches that the waking world, with its binding and its seeking, can be seen with the same light touch, as experience that comes and goes without standing apart on its own. Ordinary experience confirms the first step: a fear shrinks once its source is seen as a dream. The verse does not promise that grief, illness or a real missed flight will feel like a dream, and it does not replace a doctor or the practical work of the day. It gives a way of looking at the mind's own story of being bound, as the text teaches it.
