Meaning · English
Right order, truth, discipline, calm, fires, guests, children: each with study and teaching. Truth, says one teacher; discipline, says another; study and teaching, says a third, for that is discipline.
Twelve parts of a full life are listed: living in step with the right order of things, speaking truth, discipline, restraint of the senses, a settled mind, keeping the household fires, the daily fire offering, receiving guests, ordinary dealings with people, children, and their begetting and birth. After each comes the same phrase: and study and teaching. That means reciting the sacred text yourself and passing it on to others. Then three teachers weigh in. One ranks truth highest, another discipline. The third says study and teaching is itself discipline, and says it twice.
In a music recital, a single droning string plays under every song. The singer moves through slow pieces and fast ones, but the same steady hum sits beneath all of them. Study and teaching work the same way. Fires, guests and children change from hour to hour, while the daily recitation runs underneath and is never switched off.
