Fear of Family Collapse
Bhagavad Gita 1.41
Meaning · English
When wrongdoing overpowers a family, Krishna, its women lose their way. And when the women of the family go astray, descendant of Vrishni, children are born outside the proper order of society.
Three words carry it. Adharma is the opposite of dharma, the right conduct that holds a household together. Abhibhava is being overpowered, swamped, as a field is by flood. Varna-sankara joins varna, the class order of Arjuna's society, with sankara, mixing. The glossary gives it as unwanted progeny. Arjuna speaks here for himself. He says that when wrongdoing floods a family, its women lose their way. When they do, children are born outside the order his society keeps. This is the next link in a chain he began in the previous verse. War kills the men, the family's customs lapse, wrongdoing rushes in, and the next generation is harmed. He is arguing himself away from the battle, and the fear is real to him. But the reasoning is his, not Krishna's answer. It rests on the assumptions of his age: that a family's order depends chiefly on its women, and that classes must stay distinct. Shankara reads Arjuna's speech in this chapter as confusion born of attachment. Ramanuja reads it as grief for kin that clouds his sense of duty. Madhva likewise takes it as Arjuna's view, which Krishna goes on to answer rather than accept.
A long row of dominoes stands on a table. Arjuna looks at the first one, sees it tipping, and watches the whole row fall to the last tile far down the line. The row is his chain of fears: one act of war, then one collapse after another, each certain in his mind.
1. Tonight, pick one decision you are dreading and write down the worst chain you fear, one line per step, each starting with 'and then'. 2. Beside each step, mark it 'known' or 'imagined'. 3. Look at the first imagined step and ask how sure you really are of it. 4. Tomorrow, tell one person you trust the weakest link and listen to what they say.
The eldest son stands in his late father's shop after closing, keys in hand. His brothers want to sell. He imagines that if the shop goes, the family name goes, the cousins quarrel, and his mother loses her place at the table. Each fear leads to the next until the last one feels like a fact. Arjuna does the same in the chariot. He follows one act of war down a long line of ruin and calls the end of it certain. Set beside him, the son could see that the chain is a chain of guesses and that dread makes the guesses feel solid. He could name the links, ask which are known, and speak to his brothers about the one that frightens him most. Ordinary experience confirms that fear makes distant outcomes feel near. On the particular claim, today's understanding does not hold that the conduct of a family's women decides the worth of its children, and the text gives that claim as Arjuna's view of his age. The verse promises no relief from the grief of a hard decision, and it does not make the decision for him.
