Meaning · English

Let food be plentiful: that is the vow. Earth is food; space eats it. Each rests on the other, food on food. Knowing this, one stands firm and grows great.

The rule, or vow (vrata), for someone holding this teaching is simple: produce food in abundance. Then the familiar pairing returns. Earth is the food, and space, the open room around it, is what takes it in. Yet neither stands alone. Space is set upon earth, and earth is set within space, so one food is founded on another. A person who grasps this becomes settled, has food and the appetite to enjoy it, and grows great in children, livestock, the brightness of sacred study, and good name.

Picture a clay pot on a kitchen shelf. The clay gives the hollow inside its shape, and the hollow is what makes the clay a pot at all. Take away either one and there is no pot. Earth and space hold each other the same way, each giving the other a place to stand. That is food resting on food.
