The Thousand Cows at Janaka's Court

Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.1

The story · English

Janaka, king of Videha, once held a great sacrifice, the kind where gifts are handed out freely. Brahmins of the Kuru-Panchalas had gathered there for it. As Janaka looked over them, a wish rose in him. He wanted to know which of these Brahmins knew the scriptures best. So he had a thousand cows penned in, and to the horns of each one he had ten padas of gold tied. Then he spoke to the whole gathering. "Honored Brahmins, whichever of you is the best Brahmin, let him drive these cows away." Nobody moved. Not one of them dared. Then Yajnavalkya turned to his own pupil and said, quite simply, "Samasravas, my dear, drive them off." And Samasravas drove them off.

The Brahmins were angry. "How can he call himself the best Brahmin among us?" Now Janaka of Videha had a Hotri-priest named Asvala, and Asvala put the question straight to him. "Yajnavalkya, are you really the best Brahmin among us?" Yajnavalkya answered, "We give our respect to the best Brahmin. But we really do want those cows." So Asvala began to question him. "Yajnavalkya, everything here is caught by death. Everything is overcome by death. How does the one who offers the sacrifice get free, beyond death's reach?" "Through the Hotri-priest, through fire, through speech. Speech is the Hotri of the sacrifice. This speech is this fire, and it is the Hotri. That is release. That is complete release."

Asvala went on. "Everything here is caught by day and night. How does the sacrificer get free of day and night?" "Through the Adhvaryu-priest, through the eye, through the sun. The eye is the Adhvaryu of the sacrifice. This eye is the sun up there, and it is the Adhvaryu. That is release, complete release." "Everything is caught by the moon as it waxes and wanes. How does he get free of that?" "Through the Udgatri-priest, through wind, through breath. Breath is the Udgatri. This breath is the wind. That is release, complete release." "The open air gives no foothold, so to speak. How does he climb to the heavenly world?" "Through the brahman priest, through the mind, through the moon. The mind is the brahman of the sacrifice, and it is the moon. That is release, complete release."

Then Asvala turned to the rite being performed that very day. "Yajnavalkya, how many Rig verses will the Hotri use today?" "Three." "Which three?" "The opening verse, the accompanying verse, and the blessing as the third." "And what does one win with them?" "Everything here that has breath." "How many offerings will the Adhvaryu pour today?" "Three." "Which three?" "The ones that flare up when poured, the ones that flow over, and the ones that sink down." "What does one win with those?" "With the ones that flare up, the world of the gods, because that world shines, in a way. With the ones that flow over, the world of the fathers, because that world lies over, in a way. With the ones that sink down, the world of men, because that world lies below."

"With how many divinities does the brahman priest guard the sacrifice on the right side today?" "With one." "Which one?" "The mind. The mind has no end. The All-gods have no end. With it he wins a world that has no end." "How many hymns of praise will the Udgatri chant today?" "Three." "Which three?" "The opening hymn, the accompanying hymn, and the blessing hymn as the third." "And what are those three within the self?" "The opening hymn is the in-breath. The accompanying hymn is the out-breath. The blessing hymn is the diffused breath, spread through the body." "What does one win by them?" "The earth with the first, the middle air with the second, the sky with the third." And with that, Asvala the Hotri-priest fell silent.
