Meaning · English
Born of a tall tree on a windy slope, the trembling dice rolling across the gaming ground go to my head. The wakeful nut thrills me like Soma from Mount Mujavant.
The dice were nuts from a tall tree that grew on windy hillsides. He calls them trembling because they jump and shiver as they fall into the gaming hollow. Sāyaṇa reads 'wakeful' as the gambler's own sleeplessness: the joy of winning and the grief of losing keep him up all night. Soma was the pressed plant drink of Vedic worship, and the finest grew on Mount Mujavant. He sets the dice beside the holiest drink he knows and admits they go to his head the same way.
A slot machine at two in the morning: the reels spin, the lights flash, a bell rings, and the man on the stool has stopped counting what he has fed it. The noise and motion hold him more than any payout. The rattle and tumble of the dice work on him the same way, whatever the throw.
