Meaning · English

Let the wandering beggar not gather alms for the evening, nor for the morrow. His hand is his bowl, his belly the only vessel he carries; let him not be a hoarder, like the bee. A beggar who gathers for evening or morrow, gathering as the bee gathers, is destroyed together with what he has gathered.

The avadhuta tells King Yadu, in Krishna's retelling, what he learned from the bee. Three words carry it. Sangraha means gathering together, from sam, together, and grah, to seize: a store held tight. Bhikshu is one who lives on what is asked for and given, from bhiksh, to beg. Panipatra is hand-as-bowl: he needs no vessel but his palm. The first verse gives the rule. The wanderer does not take alms for tonight's meal and keep more for tomorrow's. He holds what one hand holds and eats what one belly needs. The second verse gives the bee as the warning. The bee gathers and keeps, and the keeping ruins it. The text says the gatherer perishes together with the gathering, so the store and the one who guards it fall at once. The question behind the teaching is how a person with no home can live without fear. The avadhuta's answer is to carry nothing that must be defended. The commentators read this as aimed first at the wandering renunciant, whose whole path depends on trusting each day's meal. It asks the listener to notice how much of the weight they carry is stored-up tomorrow.

A man wades into a river with his pockets stuffed with smooth stones he thought might be useful later. The current is gentle, but the stones pull him down. The stones are the stored tomorrows, and the water is the day he actually has to cross.

1. Tonight, look at one shelf or drawer where you keep things just in case. 2. Pick out three items you have not touched in a year and hand them to someone who needs them, or set them by the door. 3. Tomorrow, take only what today's meals and tasks need, and notice any small pull to add extra. 4. At bedtime, note whether your mind felt lighter or tighter without the spare.

A retired schoolteacher stands before a cupboard she has not opened in years. It holds tins of oil, folded cloth, jars, and boxes of soap, all bought against some lean season that never came. Her daughter asks her to clear it, and her hand will not let go of a single tin. The verse would change the moment in small steps. She first sees the cupboard as a store she must guard, and the guarding takes her attention and her evenings. Then she asks what she actually uses this week. She keeps that, and the rest goes to a neighbour. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind busy guarding tomorrow rests badly tonight. The avadhuta's rule was made for a wanderer with no home, and the text offers it as that teaching. It does not say that a family should never keep savings, grain or medicine in the house, nor does it remove real fear of want. A mother with children, or a person with a long illness, still has to plan with care, and a doctor or a trusted elder can help judge how much is enough.
