Meaning · English
Two have entered the hidden cave of the heart, the highest place, and both drink the true fruit of right action in the world of good deeds. Those who know Brahman call them shade and sunlight, and so do householders who keep the five fires and the Nachiketa fire three times.
Three words carry the verse. Guha is a cave, a hidden hollow, here the inner place of the heart. Chaya is shade and atapa is sunlight: one is dim and quiet, the other bright and exposed. The verse also speaks of drinking the fruit of right action. Yama says two live in the heart's cave. Both are said to drink what good deeds have earned. Knowers of Brahman, the vast reality the Upanishads point to, name them by contrast: one is like light, the one that acts, meets the world and tastes results. The other is like shade, the one that stays still and only looks on. Even ritual householders, who keep the five fires and the three-times Nachiketa fire, speak this way. Yama gives the reason for the pairing. Nachiketas has asked what lies beyond death, and Yama starts by showing that the person is not one simple thing. Inside the one who acts and feels, another presence is already seated. Shankara reads the two as the individual self and the Supreme Self, and says drinking belongs strictly to only one of them. The other is spoken of as drinking only because they dwell together, as we say a group walks with umbrellas when only some carry them. The listener is asked to notice that this inner companion is already there.
A man walks across a bright courtyard carrying fruit from the market, sweating and hurrying. In the shaded doorway behind him, someone sits quietly and watches him cross. The walker is the self that acts and tastes results. The one in the doorway is the stillness that sits with it in the heart.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes after dinner, with no phone, near a window or lamp. 2. Let the day replay. When a moment returns with a feeling attached, such as annoyance or pride, notice that you are watching it. 3. Say quietly to yourself, "one of me did that, and one of me is looking." Stay with the one who looks. 4. Repeat once tomorrow and note whether the watching part is calm.
A retired schoolteacher sits on her veranda at dusk after her daughter's wedding. The guests have gone. Her feet ache, her chest is full of pride and loss, and her mind keeps counting what went wrong with the food. Yama's teaching changes this moment in steps. First she sees that the pride, the loss and the counting are all being felt by one part of her, the part that worked for months and now tastes the result. Then she notices that something else is aware of all this and is not itself tired or counting. Staying with that quieter awareness, she stops arguing with the feelings and lets each pass. Ordinary experience confirms that we can notice our own worry while it is happening, and that noticing eases its grip a little. The Upanishad goes further and names that watcher as a real presence in the heart, and the text teaches it as such. The limit is plain. This does not remove her loss or tiredness, and it does not replace a doctor if the ache in her chest is more than feeling.
