One Without Color
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.1
Meaning · English
One and colorless, by his power he lays out many colors for a hidden purpose. All things begin and end in him. May that god join us to clear understanding.
The word for color also means kind or class. The source of everything has no color, no kind, no single shape. Yet through its own power it brings out every color and every kind there is, and its reason for doing so stays out of sight. The whole world starts out from it and, at the end, draws back into it. The seer calls this source a shining god and ends with a prayer. He does not ask for things. He asks to be joined to an understanding that is clear and good.
Sunlight passing through a glass prism on a windowsill throws a band of red, yellow, green and blue across the wall. The beam going in had no color anyone could see. Cover the window and every stripe vanishes together. The many kinds of things in the world come out of one colorless source the same way, and go back into it.
