Rungs Toward the Self

Katha Upanishad 1.3.10

Meaning · English

Higher than the senses are the things they meet. Higher than those things is the mind. Higher than the mind is the power that decides. Higher than that power stands the great Self.

Yama gives Nachiketas a ladder of four steps, each one higher than the last. Three words carry it. Indriya, the senses, means the powers that reach out: eye, ear, skin, tongue, nose. Artha, the objects, is what they reach: a sound, a shape, a taste. Manas, the mind, gathers these impressions and wants or fears them. Buddhi, the intellect, comes from a root meaning to wake or know. It is the part that judges and decides. Above it Yama sets the atman, the Self, what a person most inwardly is, and he calls it great. "Higher" here means finer and more commanding. The senses depend on objects to have anything to report. The mind sorts what they report. The intellect rules the mind. The Self stands behind all of them. Yama gives the ladder because Nachiketas has just heard about holding the reins. To rule the senses, one has to know what stands above them, and where the last step lies. Shankara reads each step as subtler and more inward than the one before, ending in the Self that is the inmost being of the one who knows. The verse asks the listener to look past the surface of experience toward its source.

Standing in the street, you see a gate. Behind it lie a yard, then a hall, then a study, and in the study sits the owner who runs the house. The gate is the senses, the yard the objects, the hall the mind, the study the intellect, and the owner the Self.

1. Once today, when something pulls at you, such as a phone buzz, a smell of food or a sale sign, stop for three breaths. 2. Name each step quietly: "a sound arrived", "I want to look", "I am deciding". 3. Notice which step felt strongest, and whether a gap opened between wanting and choosing. 4. At night, spend one minute recalling who was watching all of that.

A taxi driver waits at a red light at dusk. His phone chimes with a message. The sound arrives first, and his ear has already caught it. Then the wish to look rises, quick and a little anxious. Then another part weighs it: the light is about to change, a passenger is in the back, and it can wait. He leaves the phone face down. The verse describes that sequence as a ladder, with the deciding part standing above the wanting part, and the wanting part above the raw impressions. In ordinary experience this order is familiar. When he is tired or hungry, the wanting grows loud and the deciding grows weak. Seeing the steps separately gives him a little room between impulse and action. The verse does not promise that the urge will stop, or that one clear moment will settle a hard choice. It does not replace sleep, food or help when a habit has become too strong to manage alone. Yama's last step, the great Self, is his teaching about what stands above even the judging mind. It is given as his teaching, and the driver's red light does not test it.
