The Hidden Self

Katha Upanishad 1.3.12

Meaning · English

This Self lies concealed within every living thing and never lights itself up for display. Only those who look at the finest things can see it, and they see it with a mind made one-pointed and fine.

Three words carry the verse. Atman is the Self, the innermost one in each being, from a root sense of breath and essence. Gudha means covered, tucked away; it comes from a root meaning to conceal. Buddhi is the mind's power to discern and decide, and the verse describes it with two words: agrya, pointed at the tip, and sukshma, fine, like a thread rather than a rope. Yama tells Nachiketas that the Self is present in everything that lives, yet it does not show itself. It is not an object standing among other objects, so ordinary looking never lands on it. Only those who look at subtle things, the sukshmadarshins, see it, and they do so with a mind sharpened to a point and made fine. The reason follows from the verses before it. Yama has just described a climb from senses to objects to mind to intellect and beyond, and the Self stands behind all of them. A coarse, scattered mind stays among the outer rungs. So the verse asks for a trained mind, one that is gathered, quiet and exact, rather than for a new belief. Shankara reads the sharp, fine mind as one made steady and pure by discipline and by teaching, and he reads the Self as the inner witness, never the thing witnessed.

A watch face is read by everyone, and its ticking is heard across the room. The watchmaker opens the back, fixes a loupe to one eye, and holds still until the tiny balance spring comes into view. The spring was always working. The Self is like that spring, and the loupe is a mind made fine and steady.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a quiet room with your phone in another room. Let the sounds, thoughts and body sensations come as they do. 2. Then ask once, without hurrying to answer: what is it that knows all this? Rest in the asking for a minute. 3. This week, wash the dishes or walk for ten minutes giving the whole task your attention, and notice how fine your attention becomes when nothing else is pulling at it.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning while his wife is in surgery. Every sound reaches him. He reads the same notice on the wall four times and checks his phone with no reason to. His mind runs ahead to every outcome. Yama's teaching would change the moment in small steps. First, the fear and the pictures are things he is looking at, and the one looking is not the same as what is looked at. Second, he puts the phone away and lets the sounds of the corridor come and go without chasing them. Third, he asks quietly what in him is aware of all this, and stays with the question rather than an answer. Ordinary experience says a scattered, tired mind sees little, while a steadier one notices more. The teaching does not promise good news from the surgeon, and it does not take the fear away. It offers a steadier place to stand while he waits, and it does not replace the care the surgeons give.
