Let the Cut Heal
Atharva Veda 12.1.35
Meaning · English
Whatever of you I dig out, Earth, let that quickly grow back. Cleansing one, may I not strike your vital points, nor your heart.
People have to dig: for wells, for seed, for foundations, for clay. The seer does not pretend otherwise. He asks two things. First, that every hole he makes fill again quickly with growth. Second, that his tool stop short of her vital points and her heart, the places where a wound would not close. He calls her the cleansing one; Sāyaṇa takes the word as she who purifies, while others read it as she who searches. Taking from a mother is allowed. Injuring her is not.
A gardener lifts a square of turf to set a bulb, then presses the same square back down and waters it. Within weeks the roots knit and the seam disappears. Cut deeper, through the roots and into the bed below, and the patch stays bare. The seer asks for the first kind of digging and never the second.
