The Best of Lights
Rig Veda 1.113.1
Meaning · English
This light has arrived, best among all lights. A bright signal is born, reaching everywhere. As Night was born for Savitr's rising, so she has emptied her place for Dawn.
Kutsa watches the eastern sky and calls this light the best of all lights. Sāyaṇa gives the reason: stars show only themselves and the moon lights things faintly, but dawn uncovers the whole world at once. The signal is her first ray, which lets everything hidden in the dark be known again. Savitr is the sun as the one who sets the world moving each day. The word 'savāya' can mean 'for Savitr's rising', but Sāyaṇa explains that Night was born from his setting; now she steps aside so Dawn can be born.
In a dark bedroom, a phone screen glows but shows only itself. Then someone pulls the curtains open, and in one moment the chair, the shoes, the glass on the table appear, and the house starts to stir. The stars are the screen; dawn is the opened curtain, giving everything back its shape and its work.
