Meaning · English
Whoever knows Brahman reaches the highest. On this it is said: Brahman is truth, knowledge, the infinite; whoever knows it set in the cave of the heart, in the highest heaven, attains every desire together with Brahman, the wise. From this Self came space, then wind, fire, water, earth, plants, food, seed, and the human being. This person is made of the essence of food: this is its head, these its two wings, this its body, and this the tail it stands on. On this there is a verse.
The Self is Brahman, named here as truth, knowledge and the infinite: what truly is, what knows, and what has no edge. Out of it comes space first, the open room in which anything else can be. Space gives rise to moving air, air to fire, fire to water, water to solid ground. Earth grows plants, plants become food, food becomes seed, and seed becomes a person. So the human body sits at the far end of one unbroken chain, and the Self is where that chain begins.
Picture a photo of five generations: a great-grandmother, a grandmother, a mother, a daughter, and a baby on her lap. Each one came from the woman beside her, and all of them trace back to the oldest face in the frame. Space, air, fire, water and earth stand in that kind of line, each born from the one before, with the Self at the head.
