Meaning · English
Shatavari is called the many-childed, the timid one, the blue-lotus-like, the excellent, Narayani, the hundred-footed, the hundred-strengthed and the plump. Shatavari is heavy, cool, bitter and sweet, a rasayana. It gives intelligence, digestive fire and nourishment. It is unctuous, good for the eyes, and overcomes gulma and diarrhoea.
Bhavamishra first gives the plant its names. Shatavari opens with shata, a hundred, and the plant does grow a crowded bunch of fleshy roots. Bahusuta means 'many children', Bhiru 'the timid one', Indivari 'like the blue lotus', Vari 'the excellent', Narayani 'belonging to Narayana', a name of Vishnu. Shatapadi is 'hundred-footed', Shataviryā 'of a hundred strengths', Pivari 'the plump one'. Then he gives its nature. It is heavy and cool. In this system's terms, that means filling, slow to digest and calming to heat. Its tastes are bitter and sweet. It is a rasayana, a renewing substance meant to sustain the body over time. The text says it gives medha, a clear and retentive mind; agni, the digestive fire; and pushti, solid nourishment. It is snigdha, moist and oily, and good for the eyes. The text counts it against gulma, a hard swelling felt in the belly, and against loose stools.
Think of a long, soaking rain on a field baked dry. It does not flash across the surface and run off. It sinks in slowly, and the soil darkens, softens and holds together again. Shatavari is described the same way. It is heavy, cool and moist, a herb meant to soak in and rebuild what heat and wear have dried out, not to act fast.
Shatavari is the root of Asparagus racemosus, a wild relative of garden asparagus. 'Heavy' and 'cool' have no direct modern match. Research has mostly been laboratory and animal work, with a few small human trials on breast-milk supply, menopausal complaints and digestion. The findings are early and not settled. The cautions are real. Its safety in pregnancy and while nursing is not established. People allergic to asparagus may react to it. Some work suggests it may lower blood sugar and act as a mild diuretic, so it could add to the effect of diabetes medicines or water pills. Its possible hormone-like action calls for care in hormone-sensitive conditions. Products vary in strength, and some herbal preparations have been found contaminated. Ask a doctor before taking it.
