Fire's Boast of Power
Kena Upanishad 3.5
Meaning · English
The spirit asked him, "And what power do you have?" Agni answered, "I could burn up everything there is on earth, all of it."
Three words carry this. Virya means power, strength, the capacity to do something; it comes from the same root as vir, a hero. Daheyam means "I could burn", from dah, to burn; Agni speaks of what he could do, not what he has done. Sarvam means all, and Agni says it with the weight of a claim: everything on earth. Brahman is the Upanishad's name for the one reality behind all things, and here it appears as a spirit that asks a plain question: what can you do? Agni does not say who he is this time, as he did before. He names his power, and he names it at its widest. The Upanishad lets him speak fully before anything is tested. The reason is the problem the whole story answers: the gods took a victory for their own, and a claim of that size has to be put to the proof. Nothing is asked of Agni except that he say it. The listener is asked to notice how large the boast is, and to hold it until the straw comes. Shankara reads the gods' pride as forgetting that all their power is Brahman's, and reads Agni's answer as that same forgetting, spoken aloud.
A man at a wedding hands a guest a heavy ladle and says he could serve the whole village from that one pot. The pot is big, and he is sure of it. Agni's answer is that sureness: a claim about size, made before anyone has lifted a hand to serve.
1. Once today, when you catch yourself saying "I can handle this" or "I always manage", stop and finish the sentence aloud: "I can, because..." 2. Write the reason down in one line. Notice whether it names only your own effort. 3. Before bed, spend two minutes listing the people, conditions or luck that stood behind one thing that went well today.
A man who runs a small tailoring shop has just cleared a big wedding order on time. A neighbour asks how he does it. He starts to say, "Give me any order, I can finish it." The sentence is true of the last week and he is about to stretch it to every week. The verse would slow him at that point. First, he hears the question under the neighbour's question: what power is actually yours? Second, he sees that the boast has the word "all" in it, and the word is doing the work. Third, he can name who cut the cloth, who lent the second machine, and how many hours the festival gave him. His answer shrinks and becomes accurate. Ordinary experience confirms that success makes us rate our own part too high. The verse does not say his skill is false or that he should feel small, and it does not tell him whether the next order will be met.
