Firm Footing at Last
Kena Upanishad 4.9
Meaning · English
Whoever truly knows this teaching, having thrown off wrong, finds firm footing in the boundless, greatest realm of heaven. Firm footing there he finds.
Three words carry the verse. Papman means wrong, the stain left by what a person has done badly; it is what weighs on the mind. Ananta means without end, an-anta, no far edge. Pratishthati comes from prati and stha, to stand: to take a stand and stay put, like a post set deep in the ground. The Kena closes with a promise. The teacher has just named the feet the teaching rests on: penance, restraint, sacrifice. Now he names what it gives the one who knows it. Wrong is cast off, and the knower stands firmly in a realm that is boundless and the greatest. The last words are said twice, as a seal on the book. The reason is practical. Throughout the Kena the pupil asks what is really behind the mind, the breath and the senses, and the answer is Brahman, the one reality at the root of all. Knowing this removes what blocked the knower. A person who stands only on his own power has nothing firm underfoot. Shankara reads the boundless realm as Brahman itself, not a heaven reached by ritual, since such a heaven would end. For him the wrong is ignorance and its results. The verse asks the listener to let the knowing be complete, so that it clears wrong away.
A walker crosses a slope of loose stones, every step sliding, then reaches a wide flat ledge of bedrock and plants both feet. The scree is the shifting life of wrong and doubt. The ledge is the footing the verse promises, ground that does not give way.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and name one wrong you still carry, such as a debt unpaid or a harsh word unmended. 2. Tomorrow, take one small step to put it right: a message, a repayment, an apology. 3. Afterward, notice how your body feels, in your shoulders and your breath. 4. Each morning this week, before the day starts, recall the one reality the teaching points to, and stand quietly for one minute.
A man on a night train remembers the colleague whose work he once passed off as his own. Years have gone by. Nobody knows. He cannot sleep, and each time he settles, the memory shifts under him like a loose stone. The Kena speaks to this. It says that casting off wrong and knowing what is real go together, and that the result is firm footing, not just relief. So he starts with the plain act. He decides to write to the colleague, name what happened, and offer to set the record straight. Then he looks at the larger knowing the teaching points to: that his own cleverness was never what held him up. Ordinary experience confirms that an unmended wrong keeps the mind restless. The verse does not promise that the colleague will forgive him, that the past can be undone, or that the discomfort will vanish by morning. It also does not replace professional help if the sleeplessness is lasting. What it offers is a direction: wrong set down, and a ground to stand on.
