Meaning · English
Basti is remembered as of two kinds: water basti and dry basti. Water basti is to be done in water. Dry basti is to be done always on the ground.
Gheranda is telling Chanda that basti comes in two kinds. Basti means a bag or bladder, and in this teaching it names a cleansing of the lower belly. The verse sorts the two kinds by name and by setting, and says nothing more about method. The first is jala basti: jala is water, so water basti. The text says it is done in water. The second is shushka basti: shushka is dry, so dry basti. The text says it is done on the ground, where kshiti is earth or floor. The word for 'always' places the dry kind firmly on the ground, never in water. The verse is also worded as something handed down, a classification the tradition remembers, not a rule Gheranda invents. The verse gives no reason for the split except the setting. Each kind is named for the element it is done with, water or dryness. Why does the text teach it this way? Gheranda is building the list of the six cleansings, the shatkarma, and basti is the fourth. He first sets out the kinds so the student knows what is being described before the method follows. What the verse asks of a reader is only to hold the two names and their two settings clearly apart. It gives no steps.
This verse gives no method, so there is little to say about how the body works in it, and it would be wrong to invent steps. What it gives is two settings: in water, and on the ground. The next verses go on to describe the water kind, and it is plain from them that basti is about the lower gut, the large bowel and the muscles around the anus. Standing or squatting in water changes how the body is held. The water carries weight and gives a fixed depth to work against. On the ground there is no such support, so the dry kind relies on the practitioner's own control of the belly and pelvic floor. The breath and the mind are not mentioned here. In general, any practice done below the navel asks for steady, quiet attention, because the body there is not easy to feel or direct. The tradition's own account is that basti keeps the lower channels of the body clear so that the wind moving in the belly runs freely. That is the tradition's account, not a statement of physiology. The practice itself is learnt in person, from someone who has done it and can watch.
This verse names two kinds and claims nothing for them. The claims come in the next verse, which the text gives as the reward of water basti. Gheranda says it removes troubles of the urine and a gripping, obstructing wind in the belly, and that the practitioner becomes free-moving and lovely in body, like the god of love. These are the tradition's claims, not promises. Nothing here says basti works for any particular person, and nothing here can be read as a cure.
A man of seventy sits in a clinic the evening before a bowel examination, handed a preparation to drink and told to expect a long night. That is the nearest everyday meeting with this idea. Doctors do clear the lower bowel by medicine and water, for a procedure or for stubborn constipation, and a clean method is taught by trained staff. What today's medicine does not support is cleansing as routine upkeep. The bowel empties itself, and a family doctor would say a healthy gut needs no washing. Repeated enemas can irritate the lining, upset the body's salts and fluids, and leave the bowel leaning on them. Water that is not clean carries infection. The old ideas that basti frees a gripping wind, steadies the urine, or makes the body lovely have no match in modern findings. Bloating and gas are real and ordinary, but the tradition's picture of a wind that moves through channels is its own account. The two-way split into water and dry has no modern counterpart.
This is not medical advice, and basti is a cleansing a page cannot teach. Without a teacher, water that is unclean, a tool pushed in wrongly, or too much repetition can injure the lining of the bowel or upset the body's fluids. Dry basti, done forcefully on the ground, can strain the belly and pelvic floor. Anyone who is pregnant, has had recent surgery of the belly or bowel, has haemorrhoids, a bowel illness, a hernia, or low or high blood pressure, should leave it out and ask a doctor. Standing in water brings the risk of dizziness and a fall. Stop at any pain, and never force.
