The story · English
Akrura traveled to the city of Hastinapura, the seat of the Paurava kings. Upon arriving, he found himself among many familiar faces: Dhritarashtra, the son of Ambika, the great Bhishma, the wise Vidura, and Pritha. He saw Bahlika with his son, and the Kuru teachers Drona and Kripa. He also met Karna, Suyodhana, Ashvatthama the son of Drona, and the Pandavas, along with other close friends. After greeting them all warmly, Akrura exchanged news of their well-being and inquired about the state of affairs in the city. He stayed there several months to learn how the king was behaving: a weak-willed king with wicked sons, who followed the wishes of evil men.
During his stay, Pritha and Vidura spoke candidly to Akrura about the Pandavas. They described the brilliance, vigour, strength, valour, humility and other good qualities of Pritha's sons, and the deep love the people bore them. They told Akrura that Dhritarashtra's side could not bear any of this, and that it harbored a hidden desire to harm the Pandavas despite any outward appearances. They detailed the cruel deeds the sons of Dhritarashtra had already done against them, giving them poison and other wicked acts, revealing the danger that lurked within the palace walls.
Pritha, overwhelmed by longing for her home, approached Akrura with tears in her eyes. 'Do my parents and brothers still remember me?' she asked. 'Do my sisters, my nephews, and my friends still think of me?' She spoke of her nephew, the Lord Krishna, the protector of those who seek refuge. 'Do Krishna and lotus-eyed Rama remember their aunt's sons?' she wept. 'Like a doe trembling among wolves, I am lost here. Only Krishna can comfort me with his words and protect my fatherless children.' She prayed to the Lord of the Universe, begging Govinda to save her as she sank along with her children, for his lotus feet were the only refuge for those who fear death and the round of rebirth.
Seeing her distress, Akrura and Vidura consoled Pritha by reminding her that her sons had been born of the gods. Then Akrura went to King Dhritarashtra and, among friends and kinsmen, spoke to him as a friend. 'You who increase the fame of the Kurus,' he said, 'treat the Pandavas and your own sons equally. Rule the earth with righteousness and win the love of your people through your character. If you act otherwise, the world will condemn you and you will go into darkness. Remember that we are born alone and we depart alone. Wealth gained through unrighteousness is taken by foolish others who pose as dependents to be fed, as creatures of the water take the water.'
Akrura urged the king to see the world as a dream and to find peace within himself. The king replied that he never tired of such words, as a mortal never tires of nectar. Yet they would not stay in his wavering heart, swayed by love for his sons, as lightning does not stay in a cloud. No one could undo the plan of the Lord who had descended into the Yadu clan to lighten the burden of the earth, and he bowed to that Lord. Understanding the king's intention, and with the permission of his friends, Akrura departed Hastinapura and returned to the city of the Yadus. There he told Rama and Krishna how Dhritarashtra was behaving toward the Pandavas, which was what he had been sent to learn.
