Duhsasana's Blood
Mahabharata, Karna Parva 83
The story · English
Sanjaya describes a fierce encounter between the prince Duhsasana and Bhima. Duhsasana begins with great success, using a single arrow to shatter Bhima's bow and six more to pierce Bhima's driver. He then pierces Bhima with nine shafts, followed by many more powerful arrows. Enraged, Bhimasena launches a fierce dart at the prince. Duhsasana manages to cut this projectile out of the air with ten arrows shot from his bow drawn to its fullest stretch. The surrounding warriors, impressed by this difficult feat, applaud him loudly. Duhsasana then strikes Bhima once more with a deep wound. Bhima, blazing with wrath at the sight of Duhsasana, tells the prince that while he has been pierced quickly and deeply, it is now time for him to feel the stroke of a mace.
Bhima takes up his terrible mace, intending to slaughter Duhsasana. He tells the prince that he will drink his blood on the field of battle today. In response, Duhsasana fires a fierce dart that resembles Death itself. Bhima whirls his mace and hurls it with such force that it breaks the dart and strikes Duhsasana directly on the head. Bhima is perspiring like an elephant, his body slick with secretions as he delivers the blow. The impact is so violent that Duhsasana is thrown from his chariot, landing a distance of ten bows away, where he lies trembling on the ground. His steeds are slain and his chariot is reduced to atoms by the falling weapon. His armor, ornaments, attire, and garlands are displaced, and he writhes in agony.
As Duhsasana lies broken, Bhima stands amid the Kuru army and remembers every hostility the prince's family has committed. He specifically recalls the seizure of Draupadi's hair and her public disrobing, and the other wrongs inflicted upon the princess while her husbands sat by in silence. Bhima's wrath blazes like a fire fed with clarified butter. He looks toward Karna, Suyodhana, Kripa, the son of Drona, and Kritavarma, declaring that he will now slay the wretched Duhsasana. He challenges any of the other warriors to try and protect him if they can. Like a fierce lion rushing toward a mighty elephant, Bhima leaps from his car and charges toward his fallen enemy in full view of Suyodhana and Karna.
Bhima reaches the fallen prince and fixes his eyes on him. Trembling with rage, he draws his keen sword and places his foot upon Duhsasana's throat. He rips open the breast of his enemy and quaffs the warm life-blood. After throwing the body down, Bhima cuts off Duhsasana's head and, desirous of accomplishing his vow, continues to drink the blood slowly, as if enjoying the taste. He declares that the taste of this blood is superior to mother's milk, honey, clarified butter, honey-wine, or any other sweet drink on earth. Looking at the corpse, Bhima laughs softly and remarks that death has rescued Duhsasana from any further suffering he could have inflicted.
The soldiers watching Bhima drink the blood of his foe are overcome with terror. Some fall to the ground in fear, while others simply let their weapons drop from their hands. Many cry out feebly with half-shut eyes. The warriors surrounding him flee the scene with Citrasena, saying to one another that Bhima is no human being, but a Rakshasa. In the ensuing chaos, the prince Yudhamanyu leads his troops to pursue the retreating Citrasena. Yudhamanyu pierces Citrasena with seven quick arrows. Citrasena reacts like a trampled snake, turning back to pierce Yudhamanyu with three shafts and his driver with six. However, Yudhamanyu quickly ends the fight by beheading Citrasena with a keen, winged arrow.
The death of Citrasena fills Karna with wrath. He displays his prowess and puts the Pandava host to flight, prompting Nakula to rush against him. Meanwhile, Bhima, still drenched in blood, takes a small quantity of Duhsasana's blood and speaks with a loud voice so that all the heroes can hear him. He tells the dead prince that he is drinking his life-blood from his throat. He tells Duhsasana to abuse them once more and call them beasts, just as he did in the past. Bhima explains that since they were mocked and called beasts, he will now dance in the same manner, repeating those same words back to the fallen prince.
Bhima lists the long history of their suffering caused by the counsels of Shakuni, Duryodhana, and Karna. He mentions the poison in their food, the black cobras, the house of lac, the gambling, the exile, and the cruelty toward Draupadi. He blames the wickedness of Dhritarashtra and his son for a life without happiness. Blood-stained and red-faced, Bhima turns to Krishna and Arjuna. He tells them that he has accomplished his vow regarding Duhsasana. He declares that he will soon fulfill his second vow by slaying the other beast, Duryodhana. He vows that he will only find peace once he has struck the head of that wicked man with his foot.
