Aswatthaman at Night

Mahabharata, Sauptika Parva 8

The story · English

Dhritarashtra asked Sanjaya if Kripa and Bhoja had fled in fear or if they had fallen in battle like Duryodhana. Sanjaya replied that when Aswatthaman proceeded toward the Pandava camp, Kripa and Kritavarma were waiting at the gate. Aswatthaman whispered to them that they were capable of exterminating all the Kshatriyas and that he would enter the camp like Yama, the god of death. He trusted that the two of them would ensure no man escaped alive. Having said this, Aswatthaman entered the vast camp through a spot where there was no door, casting off all fear. He moved softly, guided by signs, toward the quarters of Dhrishtadyumna, seeking the prince of the Pancalas while the tired army slept in confidence.

Aswatthaman found Dhrishtadyumna sleeping on a costly bed of silk, perfumed with incense and strewn with flowers. He woke the prince with a violent kick. As Dhrishtadyumna tried to rise, Aswatthaman seized him by the hair and pressed him down to the earth. Because of sleepiness and fear, the prince could not exert his strength. Aswatthaman struck him on the throat and breast with his feet, treating him like an animal. Dhrishtadyumna tore at him with his nails and begged Aswatthaman to kill him with a weapon so that he might reach the regions of the righteous. But Aswatthaman told him that those who slay their preceptors have no such region and that he did not deserve a weapon.

Filled with rage, Aswatthaman killed Dhrishtadyumna by violently kicking his vital parts. The prince's wives and guards woke to the noise, but they were so terrified by the superhuman force of the assailant that they believed him to be a supernatural being and did not cry out. After the killing, Aswatthaman stepped onto his car and let out a roar that echoed in every direction. The women and guards then began to wail. Many Kshatriyas woke and put on their armor, asking what had happened. The wives of Dhrishtadyumna told them that a human or a Rakshasa had killed their king. When the warriors surrounded Aswatthaman, he slew them all using the rudrastra.

Aswatthaman then found Uttamauja sleeping and killed him by stepping on his throat and chest. When Yudhamanyu saw this, he believed a Rakshasa was responsible and struck Aswatthaman in the chest with a mace. Aswatthaman quickly seized him and slew him like an animal. He then proceeded through the camp, killing other sleeping car-warriors as if they were sacrificial animals. Using his sword, he cut through soldiers, horses, and elephants. Covered in blood, he looked like Death himself. Those who woke were stupefied by the noise and the sight of him. They trembled in fear, believing him to be a Rakshasa, and some simply closed their eyes in the face of the horror.

Aswatthaman then encountered the sons of Draupadi and the remaining Somakas. Alarmed by the noise and the death of Dhrishtadyumna, the sons of Draupadi fired arrows at him. Shikhandi and the Prabhadrakas also joined the attack. Remembering the death of his father, Aswatthaman became furious. He left his car and rushed at them with his golden sword and shield. He struck Prativindhya in the abdomen, killing him. Sutasoma pierced Aswatthaman with a lance, but Aswatthaman cut off his arm and struck him in the flank. Shatanika, the son of Nakula, hit Aswatthaman in the chest with a car-wheel, but Aswatthaman responded by cutting off Shatanika's head.

Shrutakarma attacked Aswatthaman's forehead with a spiked bludgeon, but Aswatthaman slew him with a sword blow to the face. Shrutakirti then fired arrows, which Aswatthaman blocked with his shield before cutting off his head. Finally, Shikhandi and the Prabhadrakas attacked from all sides. Shikhandi hit Aswatthaman between the eyebrows with an arrow. In a rage, Aswatthaman approached Shikhandi and cut him in two. He then turned his violence toward the remaining Prabhadrakas and the forces of Virata. He caused a heavy carnage among the descendants and followers of Drupada, cutting them down one by one with his sword.

The warriors in the camp felt they were seeing Death-Night personified as a bloody, elderly woman leading away the souls of men and animals in a cord. They recalled having seen this figure in their dreams since the war began and realized their destiny had arrived. Thousands of bowmen woke to find Aswatthaman cutting off their legs and hips. The earth was covered in crushed bodies and the screams of the dying. Many asked who was doing this, but they were soon silenced. Those who were unarmed or deprived of their senses vanished before his fury. Some were so stupefied by fear that they began to slay one another in the confusion.

Chaos erupted as horses and elephants broke their cords, crushing the soldiers. In the thick dust and gloom, the survivors could not recognize their own kin. Men slew their own comrades in the darkness. The guards abandoned their posts and fled, killing each other in their panic. Those who fled the camp were cut down at the gate by Kripa and Kritavarma, who then set the camp on fire in three places. Meanwhile, Rakshasas and Pishacas arrived in the camp, joyful at the carnage. They gorged on human flesh and drank the blood flowing on the ground. These creatures, with their blue throats and backward fingers, danced in bands, praising the sweetness of the blood. By the time morning dawned, Aswatthaman was so drenched in blood that his hand and the hilt of his sword seemed to have become one.

Aswatthaman met Kripa and Kritavarma, who told him they had also slaughtered thousands at the gates. Asked why Aswatthaman had not done this before, Sanjaya told Dhritarashtra it was possible only because the Pandavas, Krishna and Satyaki were away and the men were asleep. The three of them then went to find Duryodhana. They found him lying on the ground with broken thighs, vomiting blood and almost senseless. He was surrounded by wolves and hyenas waiting for him to die. Kripa lamented that destiny had brought the lord of eleven armies to the bare earth. Aswatthaman told Duryodhana that only seven remained on the side of the Pandavas, while only three remained of the Dhartarashtras. He informed the king that Dhrishtadyumna, the sons of Draupadi, and the Pancalas had all been slain, leaving the Pandavas childless.

Duryodhana regained his senses and told Aswatthaman that he had achieved what Bhishma, Karna and Drona could not. He felt equal to Indra knowing his enemies were destroyed. After saying that they would all meet again in heaven, Duryodhana gave up his life. The three survivors embraced the king and then left the field. Sanjaya concluded by saying that the armies of both sides were destroyed due to Dhritarashtra's evil policy. Upon hearing of his son's death, Dhritarashtra breathed long, hot sighs and was plunged into great anxiety.
