Meaning · English
Draw the throat in, and set the chin firmly at the heart. This lock is called Jalandhara. The Pradipika says it destroys old age and death.
Start with the name. Bandha means a lock or a bind. Jalandhara is usually read as 'holding the net', and the net is the web of vessels in the neck that the next lines of the text speak of. So the name already says where the practice happens: the throat. The instruction has two parts. First, the throat is drawn in. It is contracted and narrowed, not just left as it is. Second, the chin is set at the heart, meaning the chest, and it is set dṛḍha, firmly. The chin is placed there and held, not touched in passing. The commentary reads it with more detail. It says the chin comes down with deliberate effort to the region near the chest, leaving a gap of about four finger-widths. That measure is the commentary's addition, not the verse's. Then comes the claim. The Pradipika calls this lock the destroyer of old age and death. That is the text's promise, and it is offered as the reason for learning the lock. The commentary adds only that the lock destroys the two thoroughly. The line gives no breath, no count and no length of time. It describes a posture of the neck and nothing more. Anything about holding the breath with it comes from other teaching and from a teacher. It is not in this line.
The body part is simple to feel. When the chin drops toward the chest, the muscles at the back of the neck lengthen. The small muscles deep at the front of the neck work gently to hold the head down. The throat narrows, and swallowing becomes noticeable. Many teachers also lift the breastbone a little to meet the chin, so the head does not simply collapse forward. That lift is a modern teaching refinement, not something the line states. The spine should stay long. The shoulders stay soft and away from the ears. The breath is not specified here. Many teachers pair this lock with a held breath, but the line gives none, and a long hold can be hard on the body. Learn any such pairing only with a teacher. For the mind, the posture turns the face downward and shuts off the wide view. Attention tends to fall inward, onto the throat, the swallow and the pulse in the neck. The tradition's own account is different from this. The Pradipika's next lines speak of a net of vessels in the neck and of a fluid that flows downward. This is the tradition's account, in its own terms. It is not physiology, and the practice needs no belief in it to be tried.
The Pradipika makes one claim in this line: the lock destroys old age and death. The text states it plainly and without conditions. It is the tradition's promise and not something the page can confirm. The verses that follow give further claims, but those belong to their own readings. In this line the benefit is the single one named, and the commentary only repeats it more thoroughly, saying the lock destroys both completely. No cure of any illness is claimed here, and none should be read into it. What a reader can take from the line is what the tradition says it is for: it is held to be a lock that the practitioner makes in the throat, and a lock of great weight in the system of the seals.
A man dozes on a night train, and his chin sinks slowly to his chest. He wakes with a stiff back of the neck and perhaps a moment of lightheadedness. That small scene holds most of what can honestly be said about this lock. Today's mainstream understanding agrees on the plain mechanics. Dropping the chin lengthens the muscles at the back of the neck and engages the deep ones at the front. It can feel like a stretch, and it can be uncomfortable if the neck is already stiff or injured. It also agrees that the neck is a place to be careful: firm pressure near the carotid arteries can, in some people, slow the heart or cause faintness. That is a known reflex. It is a good reason for the teacher and the gentle approach. There is no good evidence that the posture slows ageing or defers death, and no modern equivalent for the net of vessels or the downward-flowing fluid. Those are the tradition's account, and a reader may hold them as such. What is real is the posture itself: how it feels, what it asks of the neck, and how it draws attention inward.
This is not medical advice. A page cannot correct a neck, and a teacher can. The throat lock is learnt in person, with someone watching how the chin and spine sit. Stop at once if there is pain, dizziness, tingling in the arms or any pressure in the head. The neck is delicate. Anyone with a neck or cervical spine problem, a disc injury or a recent surgery should leave it out or ask a teacher for a very gentle form. The same goes for high blood pressure, heart conditions, or a tendency to feel faint, and for pregnancy. The throat holds important vessels, and firm pressure there does not suit everyone. Never force the chin down. If it does not reach the chest, let it stop where it comes easily. Never add a long breath hold on your own. To come out, lift the head slowly, let the throat soften and breathe normally for a few moments.
