The story · English

Vyasa asked Sanatkumara what Krishna did after his grandson Aniruddha was carried off by the daughter of Kumbhanda. Sanatkumara told him. The women of Aniruddha's house wept, and Krishna was pained to hear it. Four rainy months passed while the Vrishnis mourned and found no trace of the boy. Then Narada brought word of what had happened and of Bana, who had bound him. The Vrishnis, whose only god was Krishna, were deeply grieved. Krishna heard the whole account, called Garuda to him at once, and rode out to Sonitapura to fight. With him went Pradyumna, Yuyudhana, Samba, Sarana, Nanda, Upananda and Bhadra, and Balarama too. Twelve akshauhini divisions surrounded Bana's city on every side. They broke its gardens, ramparts, towers and gates, and Bana, seeing it, came out in a rage with an army as large as theirs.

Rudra came to fight for Bana. He rode the bull Nandi, with his son Skanda and his host of Pramathas around him. The battle was terrible and made the hair stand on end. Krishna fought Shankara, Pradyumna fought Guha, Samba fought Bana's son, Satyaki fought Bana, and Garuda fought Nandi. Brahma and the lords of the gods, the sages, Siddhas, Charanas, Gandharvas and Apsarases came in their chariots to watch. Fire, Yama, Varuna and the Fever fought as well, against the Pramathas of many shapes, and there were shrieking spirits and shameless women on the field. Krishna drove off Shiva's followers with sharp arrows from his bow Sharnga. But Rudra grew furious at seeing his army broken, and roared. His host, swollen with his power, pressed the Vrishnis back. Rudra, unmoved, met every weapon with its match, and Krishna's army fled.

Then Krishna loosed his own Fever, called Shitala, a dreadful thing that burned the ten directions. Maheshvara saw it coming and sent out his Fever. The two Fevers fought, and Vishnu's cried out, crushed by Shiva's. With nowhere else to turn for safety, it praised the bull-bannered Hara. Hara, kind to those who come to him, was pleased and said, "Shitala Fever, I am pleased with you. Let your fear of my fever pass. Whoever remembers this exchange between us will have no fear of fever." The Fever bowed to Rudra and went away. Krishna saw it and was afraid, and amazed. Skanda, struck by Pradyumna's arrows, hurled his spear and Pradyumna fell bleeding, then withdrew. Kumbhanda and Kupakarna wounded Balarama and he fled. Garuda was gored by Nandi's horns and left Krishna.

Krishna, amazed at Rudra's power, told his charioteer, "Listen, Daruka. Drive my chariot fast, so that I can stand near Mahadeva and speak." Daruka drove him close, and Krishna bowed with joined hands and prayed. "God of gods, Mahadeva, you cherish those who come to you. You are the cause of the world's rise, its keeping and its end. Time, fate, action and the soul are your power. People deluded by your maya sink in sorrow over sons, wives and houses. I came by your command to cut Bana's arms. You yourself cursed Bana for his pride. Withdraw from the battle, so that your curse is not wasted, and let me cut his arms." Shiva, pleased, answered, "You speak truly. I cursed him, and you came on my order. But I cannot watch his arms cut. So put me to sleep with the jrimbhana weapon, and then do your work." Krishna fitted it to his bow and loosed it. Shiva yawned and was dazed, and Krishna cut down Bana's army with sword, mace and club.

Vyasa asked what Bana did then. Sanatkumara said that while Rudra lay asleep, Bana came out to fight Krishna, with Kumbhanda guiding his horses. Krishna roared and drew Sharnga, and its twang filled the space between heaven and earth. Bana cut down Krishna's arrows before they reached him. Remembering Shiva's feet, he roared again. Balarama and the Vrishnis struck down their foes. Garuda crushed Bana's army with his wings. Bana, enraged, remembered Shiva and used all thousand arms at once, shooting countless arrows at Krishna, the Yadavas and Garuda. Krishna answered, cut Bana's bow, killed his horses, and was struck down by Bana's mace. He rose and fought on. Then by Shiva's will Krishna took the Sudarshana discus and cut off many of Bana's arms. Four were left, and Bana's pain left him by Shankara's grace.

When Krishna raised the discus to cut off Bana's head, Rudra rose and said, "Son of Devaki, what I ordered long ago you have done. Do not cut Bana's head. Draw back the Sudarshana. By my command this discus is never wasted, and I gave it to you. Think, Janardana, you who care for all beings. I gave Bana a boon that he would not die. Once he boasted, itching for a fight, and I cursed him that one would come to cut his arms and end his pride. Go back to your home with the bride and groom." Shiva made peace between them and went home with his host and his son. Krishna drew back the discus, took the jewels Bana gave, Aniruddha with his wife, and Chitralekha, and bowed to Shiva in his heart. He beat Varuna on the road and came to Dvaraka in festival, dismissed Garuda, and walked freely about the city.
