The story · English

One day, Samba, Pradyumna and some of their companions went to play in a grove. After playing a long time they grew thirsty, and while looking for water they came across a dry well. Looking down into it, they were astonished to see a huge lizard, as big as a mountain, lying at the bottom. They tried to hoist it up with ropes of leather and thread, but could not, and ran eagerly to tell Krishna. The Lord came to the well and, with playful ease, lifted the lizard out with His left hand. At the touch of His hand it gave up its lizard form at once and became a golden-skinned being in heavenly ornaments, robes and garland, wearing a crown that shone like the sun. He looked every bit like a great deity.

Krishna looked at the man and asked, 'Who are you, O great soul? You have a most noble appearance; surely you are a divine being. Please, tell us who you are, if you feel it is appropriate to do so.' The man bowed before the infinite form of Madhava and replied, 'I am Nriga, a king of the Ikshvaku dynasty. My Lord, perhaps my name has reached your ears among the famous givers. What is unknown to you, the witness of every soul, whose sight time cannot block? Still, at your command I shall tell my story.' He then began to describe the immense generosity that had led him to this strange fate.

Nriga explained that he had once given away wealth beyond counting—as many cows as there are grains of sand on earth or stars in the sky. He gave away gold-horned, silver-hoofed Kapila cows, and elephants and horses. He donated his riches to the virtuous, the needy, and the learned Brahmanas. However, a dispute arose over a single cow. A Brahmana's cow had strayed into Nriga's herd, and unknowingly he gave it to another Brahmana. Its owner saw it being led away and claimed it as his own. Both men argued and said to Nriga, 'You are the giver and the one who took it away.' Nriga offered them a hundred thousand prime cows for that one cow and begged them to save him from falling into hell. But the owner said, 'I do not want it,' and left; the other would not take even ten thousand other cows, and left too.

Meanwhile, Nriga was taken by the messengers of Yama to the realm of death. There Yama asked whether he would first enjoy the good or suffer the bad, for he saw no end to Nriga's merit and its bright worlds. Nriga chose the bad first. 'Fall!' said Yama, and as he fell, Nriga saw that he had become a lizard. Now freed, he said to Krishna, 'O Keshava, even now my memory has not been lost, for I longed to see you! How are you, the Yogeshvara and supreme soul, seen only by pure hearts, visible to me, whose mind was blinded by misfortune? Only one whose bondage is ending can see you.' He called on Govinda and Narayana, asked leave to go to the realm of the gods, and prayed that wherever he went, his mind might rest at Krishna's lotus feet.

After Nriga paid his respects and departed in a celestial aircraft, Krishna turned to His companions. He warned them sternly that stealing from a Brahmana is a sin more dangerous than the most potent poison. He explained that those who take away the wealth of Brahmanas spend sixty thousand years as worms in filth. Krishna commanded His followers never to harm a Brahmana, even one who has wronged them, and to bow to him always, even if he strikes or curses them again and again, just as He Himself bows to Brahmanas; whoever did otherwise would be punished by Him. A Brahmana's stolen wealth, He said, drags the thief down, even one who took it unknowingly, as the Brahmana's cow did Nriga. Having spoken thus to the people of Dvaraka, the Lord, purifier of all worlds, entered His own palace.
