The Door That Stays Shut

Brahma Sutras 4.4.22

Meaning · English

No return, because scripture says so. No return, because scripture says so.

The question behind the whole book is simple: once someone reaches Brahman, the ground of everything, do they ever come back to be born again? The sutra answers no, and says it twice. The doubled phrase is the traditional mark that the work is finished. Its reason is shabda, the word of scripture, which for Vedanta is the only means of knowing such a matter, since no eye or inference can follow a person past death. Shankara adds what scripture says. Those who travel the path of light to the world of Brahma do not fall back like those who reach the moon and exhaust their earned enjoyment. Those who truly know are already free and never leave. Shankara also holds that even devotees of Brahman with qualities do not return. Ramanuja and Madhva also hold that the freed do not return, but they read the freedom as lasting nearness to a God who remains distinct.

Think of the final line of a long letter, written twice before the signature. The writer is not stalling. Repeating it tells the reader the letter is closed and nothing further follows. The doubled phrase works like that: it seals the argument of four chapters and says the matter of return is settled.

No modern discipline can test this claim. Whether anything of a person continues after death, and whether it could ever be released from repeating, lies outside what physiology, psychology or physics can measure. Mainstream science finds no evidence for rebirth and treats consciousness as dependent on a living brain, though the hard problem of consciousness, why experience exists at all, remains open and leaves idealists and panpsychists room to disagree with strict physicalism. The sutra's method is also worth noting. It rests on testimony, which empiricists such as Hume would not accept as sufficient for a claim of this kind. Vedanta replies that some matters can only be known through scripture. That is a real disagreement about what counts as a means of knowledge, and it remains unresolved.
