Meaning · English
Rama's might and wisdom, even Shesha's thousand tongues cannot sing. One arrow of his can dry a hundred oceans. Ravana laughed at his messenger, called Rama a coward, then took the letter in his left hand. It warned: do not ruin your clan with sweet talk.
Three voices run together here. The spy, called dūta, is speaking first. He tells Ravana that Rama's strength is past telling, that one arrow could dry a hundred oceans, and that Rama asked Vibhishana, a man skilled in policy, before turning to the ocean for a path. Ravana laughs. Tulsidas gives his reply as scorn: Rama is a coward by nature, and that is why he flatters the sea. Ravana says he has already measured his enemy, and that a man whose own counsellor trembles has no victory to look for. The spy's anger rises, but he waits for the right moment, then draws out the pātī, the letter Lakshmana sent. Ravana takes it with his left hand and smiling, a mark of disrespect, and has a counsellor read it aloud. The doha is the letter's heart. Lakshmana calls Ravana a saṭha, a rogue who hides in cleverness, and tells him not to flatter himself with talk and wreck his family. He says that opposing Rama, no refuge will save him, not Vishnu, Brahma or Shiva. The tradition places this here to show a warning given plainly and received with a laugh. It asks the listener to notice how pride can hear a clear caution and treat it as a joke.
A man pins up a flood notice on his gate, and his neighbour reads it with one hand in his pocket, laughing, while the river rises behind the house. Ravana is the neighbour, and the laugh is how pride answers a warning.
