Meaning · English

Seeing his moment, Vibhishana bowed at his brother's feet and spoke: whoever wants good name and welfare should shun another's wife like the fourth-day moon; a lord of fourteen worlds falls by harming beings. Lust, anger, pride, greed lead to hell; leave them, worship Raghubir.

Three Awadhi words carry the teaching. Lilar is the forehead, and the line says another man's wife is something to turn the forehead away from. Cauthi ke canda is the moon of the fourth day, which tradition holds brings disgrace to anyone who looks at it, so people avert their eyes. Bhajahu comes from bhaj, to share in, and means worship as loving company, not ritual. The flatterers around Ravana keep praising him, and Vibhishana waits for the right moment. He bows at his brother's feet, sits when given leave, and says he will speak only because Ravana asked, as far as his understanding goes and for Ravana's good. Tulsidas shows a man who tells the truth gently. His counsel runs in steps. Whoever wants good name, sound judgment, good fortune and comfort must give up another's wife. A man may rule all fourteen worlds, yet one who is hostile to living beings does not last. Even a man who is a sea of virtue and shrewd in affairs is not called good by anyone if he has a little greed. The doha gathers it up: lust, anger, pride and greed are the road to hell, so drop them all and worship Raghubir, as the saints do. The reason given is Ravana's own good. Vibhishana's answer to what Ravana should do is to let go of what pulls him down and turn to Rama.

A pot of fresh milk with one spoonful of sour curd stirred in. By evening the whole pot has turned. The milk is the man's goodness and skill, and the spoonful is the small greed Vibhishana says is enough to spoil everyone's good opinion of him.
