Sweet From Face to Step
Madhurashtakam 1
Meaning · English
Sweet his lips, sweet his face, sweet his eyes, sweet his smile, sweet his heart, sweet his walk. Everything about the lord of sweetness is sweet.
Six things are named, and each is called sweet: his lips, his face, his eyes, his smile, his heart, the way he walks. The first four stay on his face. Then the list turns inward to the heart, and out again to how he moves. The last line gives the reason: he is the lord of sweetness, the one it belongs to, so there is no part of him where it stops. The word is not praise added to him. It is what each part already is.
A stick of sugarcane is sweet wherever it is broken, near the top, in the middle, close to the root. The juice runs its whole length, so no piece is the sweet one and no piece is not. The hymn is not picking out his best features. Lips, eyes, heart and walk are pieces cut from one cane.
