What He Wears and Does

Madhurashtakam 2

Meaning · English

Sweet his clothes, sweet his deeds, sweet his words, sweet the way he turns, sweet his walk, sweet his wandering. All of the lord of sweetness is sweet.

The list here is not of his body but of what he wears and what he does. His clothes. His conduct, all his doings. His words. Then three kinds of movement, told apart with care: the way he bends and turns, the way he walks, the way he wanders here and there. Each gets the same plain word, sweet, and none is ranked above another. The closing line gathers them up: whatever belongs to the lord of sweetness is sweet, all of it.

A grandmother keeps her husband's old shawl folded in a trunk. It is plain wool, a little frayed, and she knows it by touch in the dark. Nothing in the weave makes it precious; it is his. The clothes, the walk, the wandering are sweet the same way, because of whose they are.
