Flute, Dust and Friendship

Madhurashtakam 3

Meaning · English

His flute is sweet, the dust he walks in, his hands, his feet: sweet. His dancing, his friendship: sweet. Everything about the lord of sweetness is sweet.

The list now reaches past his body. The flute is an object he holds, and it stands beside his hands and feet as an equal. Even dust is named, the ordinary dirt of the paths he walks. Then come two things no one can hold: his dancing, and his friendship, the easy closeness he keeps with his companions. The last line gathers it up. He is called the lord of sweetness, and so nothing of his is left out.

Picture a jar that has held honey for years. The lid is sticky, the spoon left beside it is sweet, and the ring on the shelf where it stood draws ants. None of that is honey, yet all of it is sweet. The flute and the dust are like that: sweet because they have been close to him.
