The Herd and the Whole World
Madhurashtakam 8
Meaning · English
Sweet the cowherds, sweet the cows, sweet his staff, sweet what he makes, sweet what he breaks, sweet what comes to fruit. Everything of the Lord of sweetness is sweet.
It opens on the pasture. The cowherd boys, the cows, and the plain stick he uses to guide them are the everyday gear of his herding life. Then the list widens past any one thing: creation, what he brings into being; what is broken or crushed; and what ripens and bears fruit. Making, undoing and ripening between them cover nearly everything that happens anywhere. So the sweetness is not kept to his features and belongings. It reaches the breaking as fully as the growing.
Picture a roadside juice stall. The man feeds a stalk of sugarcane through steel rollers, and it comes out flat and split while the glass fills. The cane was sweet whole, and it is sweet crushed; the crushing took nothing away. What is broken in his world is the same: still sweet.
