Radha and the Cowherd Girls

Madhurashtakam 7

Meaning · English

Sweet are the cowherd girls, sweet his play, sweet is Radha, sweet their meeting; sweet his glance, sweet his manners. Everything of the lord of sweetness is sweet.

The hymn turns from Krishna himself to the people who love him. The cowherd girls are sweet. Radha is sweet. His games with them are sweet, and so is their meeting. Then come two quieter words. One is his glance, which can also mean simply the sight of him. The other is his good manners, the gentle and proper way he treats people. Some read that word as whatever he leaves behind. The last line gathers it all up: whatever belongs to the lord of sweetness is sweet.

Picture one lamp set down in a dark courtyard. The faces around it turn gold, and so do their hands, the brass cups and the edge of the mat. All of that glow comes from the one small flame in the middle. The cowherd girls, Radha and their meeting are sweet the same way, lit by being near him.
