Red Seeds and River Water

Madhurashtakam 6

Meaning · English

Sweet his string of red wild seeds, sweet his garland; sweet the Yamuna, sweet its waves, sweet its water, sweet the lotus. Everything of the Lord of sweetness is sweet.

The list starts at his neck and moves outward. First comes the string of small red seeds that cowherd boys pick in the forest and wear as beads. Then comes his flower garland. After that the poet turns to the river: the Yamuna, its waves, its water and the lotus floating on it. None of these is Krishna himself. They are things he wears, or the water near him, and the same word lands on each. The closing line gathers them in: whatever is his is sweet, all of it.

A mother keeps her son's first sandals in a cupboard. The soles are worn thin and one strap is mended with thread. Anyone else would throw them away. Now and then she takes them out just to hold them. The seeds, the garland and the river water are like that: plain things that become dear because of whose they are.
