Meaning · English

His doing is sweet, his rescuing, his stealing, his play, what he spits out, his calm — all sweet. Everything about the lord of sweetness is sweet.

Six things he does, each called sweet. His doing is anything he takes in hand. His rescuing comes from the word for crossing water: getting someone safely to the far bank. His stealing is taking what is not his, and it is praised with the rest. His play is simple delight. Then the surprise, what he spits out, a word no one would pick for praise. Last comes his calm, the quiet he settles into. Mischief and calm get the same word.

A mother leaves her toddler's sticky handprints on the glass door for weeks. Anyone else's smudges she would wipe off by lunch. These stay, because his small hands made them. The hymn looks at Krishna the same way: his untidy moments are sweet with the rest, because they are his.
