Cleaning the Mind's Mirror

Hanuman Chalisa 1

Meaning · English

With the dust of my guru's lotus feet I polish the mirror of my mind, and tell the spotless fame of Raghu's best, giver of the four fruits.

Tulsidas does not open with Hanuman. He opens with his own mind, which he calls a mirror. Dust has settled on it, so what it shows is blurred. To clean it he uses something unexpected: dust from his teacher's feet, which he calls lotus feet. Humble dust from a revered teacher becomes the polish. Once the mind is clear, he feels fit to tell Rama's fame. He calls it spotless, and says it gives the four fruits: right living, livelihood, fulfilled desire, and release.

Picture an old brass mirror in a family home, gone dull with years of grime. Someone rubs it with a pinch of fine ash, and a face slowly comes back into view. Tulsidas's mind is that mirror. The guru's foot-dust is the ash. What comes back into view is Rama, seen clearly enough to be sung.
