A Request for Strength

Hanuman Chalisa 2

Meaning · English

Knowing this body to be without understanding, I remember you, son of the Wind. Give me strength, wisdom and learning, and take away my troubles and faults.

Tulsidas begins by owning a lack. He calls himself a body short of understanding, and because he knows it, he turns his mind to Hanuman, the son of the Wind. He asks for three things: strength, good sense and learning. Then he asks Hanuman to take away two burdens. One is the troubles that wear on him from outside. The other is the faults that bend him from within, such as anger, greed and pride. He asks out of honesty about himself, not out of any claim to merit.

Picture someone who cannot reach a jar on a high shelf. They do not pretend they can. They call the tallest person in the house and say plainly what they need. Tulsidas does the same. Admitting he is short of understanding is what lets him name his needs clearly to Hanuman, who has strength and wisdom to spare.
