Duty Without Craving

Bhagavata Purana 11.10.1

Meaning · English

Attentive, taking me as his refuge, and with a self free of desire, let him practise the duties I have declared: his own duties, the conduct proper to his class, his stage of life and his family.

Three words carry this teaching. Svadharma is one's own duty: dharma, from dhri, to hold up, and sva, own. It is the role that holds a life and the lives around it together. Ashraya is refuge, from shri, to lean on. Krishna asks to be the thing leaned on. Akama means without kama, craving. The doing stays. The colour of wanting goes out of it. Krishna tells Uddhava to practise the duties he has laid out, and to keep the conduct that belongs to his class, his stage of life and his family. Attentive means the mind is gathered on the work and not drifting. Refuge means the work is handed to Krishna and not to its reward. Desirelessness means the action goes ahead while the hunger for its fruit is dropped. Why is this taught here? Uddhava has asked how a person is freed, and Krishna has just described beings pushed about by their own wanting. This is the first step of his answer. He does not send Uddhava away from life. He changes what stands behind the action. In Krishna's teaching, duty done for results binds, and duty done leaning on him does not. The commentators treat the last word, desirelessness, as the hinge of the verse. Uddhava is asked to keep the ordinary tasks of his place, give them full attention, and let go of what he hopes to get from them.

A woman carries a brimming pot of milk across a crowded courtyard. Her eyes stay on the pot, not on who is watching or praising. The pot is the duty, the steady eyes are attention and refuge, and the missing thought of applause is the absence of craving.

1. Pick one ordinary duty today, such as cooking a meal, answering a message, or helping a child with homework. 2. Give it ten minutes of full attention, with nothing else open and no phone in hand. 3. Before you begin, say silently, "This is offered to Krishna." 4. Notice the moment you start wanting thanks or a result. Name it, then go back to the work.

A tailor in a small shop has a wedding order due tomorrow. The customer is rude, may haggle over the price, and may not pay on time. His mind is already at the counter, arguing about money that has not been paid. His hands slow down and the seams go crooked. The verse would change this in steps. He would first ask what the work in front of him is, and the answer is this sleeve, this hem. He would give those his whole attention, since the work is his to do and the payment is not. He would then hand the outcome to Krishna instead of carrying it through every stitch. Ordinary experience confirms the first part: a mind busy with the result does the task worse. The verse does not promise that the customer will pay, that the rent will be met, or that worry will vanish. It also does not replace the practical step of settling the price before starting. It speaks to the way the work is done, not to what the work earns.
