Manu and the Fish

Shatapatha Brahmana 1.8.1

The story · English

In the morning they brought Manu water for washing, the way people still bring water to wash their hands. As he was washing, a fish came into his hands. It spoke to him. "Keep me," it said, "and I will save you." Manu asked, "From what will you save me?" The fish said, "A flood will carry away all these creatures. From that I will save you." "How am I to keep you?" Manu asked. The fish answered, "While we are small, there is much that destroys us. Fish swallows fish. Keep me first in a jar. When I outgrow the jar, dig a pit and keep me in it. When I outgrow the pit, take me down to the sea. By then I will be beyond the reach of harm."

The fish soon became a great fish, a jhasha, for that kind grows the largest of all. Then it told Manu, "In such and such a year the flood will come. Build a ship and wait for me. When the flood rises, go into the ship, and I will save you." Manu kept the fish just as it had asked, and when it was grown, he carried it down to the sea. In the very year the fish had named, he built a ship and waited, as he had been told. When the flood rose, he went into the ship. Then the fish came swimming up to him. Manu tied the ship's rope to the fish's horn, and with it the fish sped away over the waters to the northern mountain.

There the fish spoke to him. "I have saved you," it said. "Now tie the ship to a tree. But do not let the water cut you off while you are up on the mountain. As the water sinks, you may slip down after it, little by little." So Manu did as the fish said. Each time the water went lower, he followed it down a little further, and then a little further again, never leaving himself stranded above it. That is why this slope of the northern mountain is still called Manu's Descent. The flood swept away every one of those creatures, all of them. Of all who had lived, Manu alone was left here, on the slope, as the waters drew back.

Manu wished for offspring. So he went on praising and toiling. There, too, he performed a pakayajna, a simple cooked offering. Into the waters he poured ghee, sour milk, whey and curds. A year later, a woman came into being from them. She rose up from the waters as if firm and solid, and wherever she stepped, ghee gathered in her footprints. Mitra and Varuna met her on her way. They asked her, "Who are you?" "Manu's daughter," she said. "Say instead that you are ours," they told her. "No," she said. "I belong to the one who brought me into being." They wished to have a share in her. Whether she agreed to that or did not agree, she passed on, and she came to Manu.

Manu asked her, "Who are you?" "Your daughter," she said. "How, lady, are you my daughter?" She answered, "Those offerings you poured into the waters, the ghee, sour milk, whey and curds, from them you brought me into being. I am the blessing. Make use of me in the sacrifice. If you do, you will be rich in offspring and in cattle. And whatever blessing you ask through me will all be granted to you." So Manu placed her in the middle of the sacrifice, for the middle is what lies between the fore-offerings and the after-offerings. With her, wishing for offspring, he went on praising and toiling. Through her he brought forth this race, the race of Manu. Whatever blessing he asked through her, all of it was granted to him.
