Vishnu the Dwarf

Shatapatha Brahmana 1.2.5

The story · English

The gods and the Asuras were both children of Prajapati, and they were rivals. For a time the gods were getting the worst of it, falling behind at every turn. The Asuras saw this and began to think, "This world belongs to us now. It is ours and no one else's." So they said to one another, "Come, let us divide up this earth between us. Once we have shared it out, we can live off it." They took the hides of oxen and began to measure the ground with them, laying hide after hide, working from the west toward the east. Piece by piece the earth was being cut up and handed out, and the gods had no share in any of it. The Asuras did not think to ask them.

Word of it reached the gods. They heard, "The Asuras are dividing up this earth." They said among themselves, "Let us go to the place where the Asuras are dividing it. If we get no share of it, what will become of us?" So they set out together. They did not go empty-handed. They put Vishnu at their head, and Vishnu was the sacrifice itself. When they arrived, they spoke to the Asuras plainly. "Let us have a share in this earth with you. Give us a part of it too." The Asuras answered grudgingly, as people do when they would rather say no. "As much ground as this Vishnu lies down on," they said, "that much we will give you." Then they waited to see what the gods would make of so small an offer.

Now Vishnu was a dwarf. So the Asuras were offering the gods only as much earth as a dwarf could cover lying down. Yet the gods were not offended. They said, "They have given us a great deal. They have given us as much as the sacrifice measures." Then they laid Vishnu down with his head toward the east, and they closed him in on every side with the sacred metres of the chants. On the south they said, "With the Gayatri metre I enclose you." On the west they said, "With the Trishtubh metre I enclose you." On the north they said, "With the Jagati metre I enclose you." So Vishnu lay held within the metres, on three sides, and the east was still open before him.

When they had closed him in with the metres on every side, the gods laid a fire in the east. Then they went on with it, worshipping and toiling, and through it they came to possess this whole earth. Because they obtained the whole of it by this means, the altar is called the vedi, the place of obtaining. That is why people say, "As large as the altar is, so large is the earth." By the altar the gods won all of it. The small patch the Asuras had given them, as much as a dwarf lies on, became through the sacrifice the measure of everything. The Asuras had tried to keep the world for themselves and share it among themselves alone, and in the end the gods held all of it.

But Vishnu was worn out. He was closed in by the metres on three sides, with the fire in the east, and there was no way out for him. So he hid himself among the roots of the plants. The gods said, "Where has Vishnu gone. Where has the sacrifice gone." Then they answered themselves: "He is closed in by the metres on every side, with the fire in the east. There is no way out. Look for him right here." They searched for him as if they were digging, and they found him three fingers deep. That is why the altar should be three fingers deep. And that is why Panci made the altar for the Soma sacrifice three fingers deep. Whoever knows this takes the whole earth from his rivals and shuts them out of it.
