The story · English
Harishchandra, son of Vedhas, of the line of Ikshvaku, was a king with a hundred wives and not one son. The sages Parvata and Narada were staying in his house, and he asked Narada, "Everyone wants a son, those who understand and those who do not. What does a man gain by one?" Asked in one verse, Narada answered in ten. A father pays his debt in his son and reaches what does not die, if he sees the face of a son born living. The husband enters his wife and is born from her again in the tenth month, which is why a wife is called jaya. A son is a light in the highest heaven. Then Narada told him, "Go to King Varuna. Say: let a son be born to me, and I will sacrifice him to you."
Harishchandra did, and Varuna said, "So be it." A son was born, named Rohita. Varuna came: "Sacrifice him to me." The king said, "An animal is fit only after ten days. Let him pass ten days." Varuna agreed, and came again. "Let his teeth come in." They came in. "Let his teeth fall out." They fell. "Let them come in again." They came. "A warrior is fit only once he has his armour." Rohita grew and took up armour, and Varuna said, "Now sacrifice him to me." The king said, "So be it," and called his son. "My boy, Varuna gave you to me. Let me sacrifice you to him." Rohita said no. He took his bow and went into the forest, and wandered there a year.
Then Varuna seized Harishchandra, and his belly swelled. Rohita heard and turned toward the village, but Indra met him in a man's form and said, "There is no good fortune for the one who does not tire himself. Keep walking." So for six years Rohita kept walking. The walker finds honey and the sweet udumbara fruit; look at the sun, who never grows weary. In the sixth year he met the sage Ajigarta Sauyavasi, starving, with three sons: Shunahpuchchha, Shunahshepa and Shunolangula. "I will give you a hundred," Rohita said, "and ransom myself with one." The father held back the eldest; the mother held back the youngest. They gave the middle one, Shunahshepa. Varuna accepted him: "A Brahmin is worth more than a Kshatriya." He taught the king the Rajasuya, and the boy was bound as the victim.
Vishvamitra was the hotar, Jamadagni the adhvaryu, Vasishtha the brahman, Ayasya the udgatar. No one would bind the boy to the post. Ajigarta said, "Give me another hundred and I will." They did. No one would cut him. "Another hundred and I will." They gave it, and he came sharpening his knife. Shunahshepa thought, "They will kill me as if I were not human. Let me go to the gods." He praised Prajapati, who sent him to Agni; Agni sent him to Savitar; Savitar to Varuna; Varuna back to Agni; Agni to the All-Gods; they to Indra, who, pleased, gave him a golden chariot; Indra to the Ashvins; they to Ushas. With every verse a fetter loosened and the king's belly shrank. At the last verse the fetters fell away, and Harishchandra was well.
The priests asked Shunahshepa to finish the day's rite, and he did. Then he sat in Vishvamitra's lap. Ajigarta said, "Give me back my son." "No," said Vishvamitra. "The gods gave him to me." So he became Devarata. Shunahshepa told his father, "You came with a knife in your hand and chose three hundred cows over me. What you did cannot be mended." Vishvamitra made him his eldest son. The fifty elder of his hundred and one sons refused, and he cursed their descendants to the margins of the land. Madhuchhandas and the fifty younger accepted, and their father blessed them. This story, told by the hotar to an anointed king on a golden cushion, answered "Om" and "So be it", frees a king from sin, and those who want sons will have sons.
