Sarama and the Panis

Rig Veda 10.108

The story · English

The Panis kept their hoard far away, beyond the end of any road most travellers ever walk. One day a visitor arrived at their stronghold. It was Sarama, and she had come alone across the waters of the Rasa. The Panis looked her over and questioned her. 'What are you after, Sarama, coming all this way? The road behind you is long, and it runs off into the distance. What business do you have with us? What happened to you on the way? And how did you ever get across the waters of the Rasa?' Sarama answered without hurry. 'I go where I am sent. I am the messenger of Indra, and I have come looking for your great hidden treasures, Panis. I was afraid of the leap across, and that fear kept me safe. That is how I crossed the waters of the Rasa.'

The Panis grew curious about the one who had sent her. 'Tell us about this Indra, Sarama,' they said. 'What is he like? What does he look like, this lord whose messenger you are, travelling here from so far away? Let him come to us himself. We will make a friend of him, and he can be the herdsman of our cows.' It was an offer meant to draw him in, and Sarama did not take it. 'I do not know Indra as someone who can be tricked,' she said. 'He is the one who brings others down, the one who sent me here from far away as his messenger. Deep rivers, however fast they run, cannot hide him from view. You Panis will end up lying on the ground, struck down by Indra.'

The Panis did not back away. Instead they pointed to what she had come for. 'Here are the cows you have been searching for, Sarama, fortunate one, you who fly around to the far edges of the sky. Who is going to hand them over to you without a fight? And you should know that our weapons are sharp.' Sarama was not frightened by this. 'Your words, Panis, are not an army. They cannot wound anyone. Your bodies are wicked. Let them be beyond the reach of arrows, if that is what you think. Let the road that leads to you be hard to force open. It will make no difference. Whichever way it goes, Brhaspati will show you no mercy at all.'

The Panis boasted of their stronghold. 'This treasure of ours, Sarama, has solid rock for its floor. It is packed full with cows, with horses, with every kind of wealth. The Panis guard it, and they are careful watchmen. You have come to this empty, lonely place for nothing.' Sarama answered them with a promise. 'The seers will come here, sharpened by Soma. The Angirases will come, tireless, and the Navagvas with them. They will break open this pen of cows and divide it among themselves. When that day comes, you Panis will wish you could spit these proud words back out of your mouths.' The Panis heard her, and they saw that threats and boasting would not turn her away.

So the Panis tried something else. 'Sarama, you have come all this way, driven here by divine power. Do not go back. We will make you our sister. Fortunate one, we will give you a share of the cows.' Sarama refused. 'I know nothing of brotherhood or sisterhood. Those things are known to Indra and to the fearsome Angirases. When I set out, they were longing for these cows. Go away from here, Panis, far away from this place. Go far off, Panis, as far as you can. Let the cows come up out of hiding, breaking free by the order of truth. These are the hidden cows that Brhaspati found, and Soma, and the pressing stones, and the wise seers.' With that, Indra's messenger had given her final answer.
