Pururavas and Urvashi

Rig Veda 10.95

The story · English

Pururavas found her at last and called out. "Wife, stay a moment. Hard as your heart is, let us talk together now. If the things we carry stay unspoken, they will give us no peace in the days to come." Urvashi turned to him. "What use are words to me now? I slipped away from you the way the earliest dawn slips from the sky. Go back home, Pururavas. I am like the wind, and no one holds the wind." He spoke of what he had lost. His arrow no longer leaves the quiver for glory, and he no longer wins cattle by the hundred. Then she remembered the house they had shared, where she had brought gifts to his father and gone each day and night to her husband's bed.

"Three times a day you held me close," Urvashi said, "even on the days I came to you coldly. I followed your wishes, Pururavas. You were my king then, my hero." She spoke of the companions who had moved with her, Sujurni, Shreni, Sumna-api, Hradechakshus, Granthini and Charanyu. They had gone off like ruddy cattle in their brightness, calling out like cows with milk to give. When Pururavas was born, the women of heaven sat around him, and the rivers raised him of their own will. "The gods made you great, Pururavas," she said, "for a mighty battle, to strike down the Dasyus."

Pururavas remembered how it had been. "When I, a mortal, came near those women who were not mortal, as they cast off their garments, they shrank from me in fear, like a startled doe, like horses that touch the chariot and bolt." Even so, when a man reaches for the deathless ones, they show their bodies like swans and play like horses at their games. "She flashed like falling lightning," he said, "and brought me treasures from the waters. Now a noble son is born from the waters. May Urvashi live long." She answered, "You were born to protect the land, and you gave that strength to me. I knew, and I warned you on that very day, but you would not listen. What are you saying now?"

"When will the son who was born look for his father?" Pururavas asked. "When he understands, will he cry and shed tears? Who would part a husband and wife who are of one mind, while the fire burns in your husband's family home?" Urvashi said, "I will answer you. He will shed tears and cry out, but he will not weep for nothing when his care is kind. I will send you what is yours that is with me. Go home, foolish man. You will not win me." Then Pururavas said, "Your friend will leave this very day and never come back, to go to the farthest distance. He will lie down in the lap of Nirriti, and fierce wolves will eat him."

"Pururavas, do not die," Urvashi said. "Do not throw yourself away, and do not let the cruel wolves have you. There is no friendship that lasts with women. Their hearts are the hearts of hyenas. I walked among mortals in another shape and stayed four autumns, through their nights. Once a day I took a single drop of ghee, and I still go on satisfied with that." Pururavas called once more. "I, the best of men, call to Urvashi, who fills the middle air and measures out the sky. Let the gift of a good deed come to you. Come back. My heart is burning." She gave him the gods' answer. "Son of Ila, you are bound to death. But your children will worship the gods with offerings, and you yourself will rejoice in heaven."
