Fullness at the breath's turning
Vijnana Bhairava 24
Meaning · English
The breath moves up, the life-breath moves down, each a letting go, and the highest sounds forth. At the two places where each one arises, by filling, fullness stays.
Three words carry it. Prana is the breath that moves up and out, from a root meaning to breathe forth. Jiva, the living one, is here the breath that moves down. Visarga is release, a sending out, the same word used for the soft breath that ends a syllable. Bharita is filled, from bharana, filling. Now the clauses. One breath goes up. One goes down. Both are of the nature of release: each is a letting go, not a grab. In that letting go the highest sounds forth, so the supreme is already speaking inside the ordinary breath. Each movement has a place where it arises, two in all. At those two places there is filling, and by that filling a fullness stays. This works as a doorway because nothing has to be made. The breath already comes and goes, and each movement already has two ends. Bhairava points to those ends and says fullness is found there, in a moment you already have. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not printed with this verse here, so this reading stays with the words themselves.
1. Sit or stand comfortably and let the breath move on its own. Do not change it. 2. Notice the out-breath going and the in-breath coming. These are the two movements. 3. Turn attention to the two places where each movement begins, at the end of one and the start of the next. 4. Rest there, as if filling those places with attention. Do not hold the breath or stretch the pause. 5. When the mind wanders, notice that it did, and return to the next turning point. 6. Stop when the time you set is over.
The tradition's own account: the breath is two movements, and the mind travels with them. At the two places where each movement arises, the movement stops, and the mind has nothing to ride. Support drops away, and awareness is left with fullness, which the text says stays. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. The turning points are brief and easy to miss. At first attention follows the middle of the breath, the long part, and slips past the ends. Then it hunts for the gap and starts to push or hold the breath. That is the usual error. The breath is meant to go on by itself. Small signs that it is working: the pause at a turning point lasts a little longer without being held. The breath feels less like something done and more like something happening. Thoughts still come, and the ends of the breath are still there when attention returns. Some sits show nothing. That is ordinary.
