Resting in both spaces
Vijnana Bhairava 25
Meaning · English
The breath, inside or outside, does not turn back from the pair of spaces. In this way, through Bhairavi, the very form of Bhairava is made plain, Bhairavi.
Three words carry it. Marut is the breath, the moving air. Viyad-yugma is a pair of spaces: viyat is open sky or emptiness, yugma is a couple. Read with the words inside and outside, the pair is the emptiness within and the emptiness beyond the body. Anivartana is not turning back, not returning. Vapu is a form or body, here the very make of Bhairava. So the breath is followed in two places, within and without, and at each it goes into the space and is not called back. Nothing is added. The ordinary breath is simply allowed to reach both spaces and stay there. The last clause says the form of Bhairava is made plain through Bhairavi. She is the one addressed, and the instrumental form also lets her stand as the means. Why does this work as a doorway? Everyone already breathes, and every breath ends in a space and begins from one. Bhairava's answer is that the moment is not entered from outside. The gaps already in the breath are opened from inside, and what shows there is his own form.
1. Sit or stand where you will not be moved for a while, and let the breath go on at its own pace. 2. Follow the out-breath to where it ends, outside the body, and let your attention go into that open space. 3. Follow the in-breath to where it ends, inside, and let your attention rest in that space as well. 4. Do not pull the breath back or push it on. Let each one finish. 5. When the mind wanders, notice where the breath is and return to the nearer of the two spaces. 6. Stop when the sit feels complete, and let the breath go on as it was.
The tradition's account is that the breath's movement is what keeps the mind moving. When the breath rests in the inner and outer spaces and is not drawn back into the round of grasping, the support of the mind's restlessness drops away. Awareness is left knowing itself, which the text calls the form of Bhairava. A sitter usually finds the first difficulty is the habit of finishing the breath and hurrying to the next one. Attention wants to hold the breath itself, so it keeps catching on the air at the nostrils. A small sign it is working is that the end of the out-breath feels wider than the rest, and the mind does not rush to fill it. The same may be noticed at the end of the in-breath. The usual mistakes are forcing a pause, tightening the chest to make room, or imagining a space instead of noticing one. Another is treating inside and outside as two jobs. Thoughts may still come, and the noticing of them is part of the sit.
